UNIVERSITY OF KENTUCKY SUMMER WORKSHOP

A DOW JONES JOURNALISM WORKSHOP FOR HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS
JUNE 18-28, 2008
APPLICATION DEADLINE: APRIL 4, 2008

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to be a professional journalist covering a press conference in the White House, interviewing a nationally known athlete before a big game, or living with U.S. troops in a war zone? Have you wondered how YOU could become a journalist?

If so, the UK-Dow Jones Summer Journalism Workshop is the opportunity you've been seeking. For 10 days, high school students who will graduate in 2008, 2009 or 2010 will live on the Lexington campus, learn reporting and writing skills, interview and photograph newsmakers and help produce the workshop newspaper. In addition, workshop participants who elect to enroll in the UK School of Journalism and Telecommunications will be considered for a scholarship.

All students are encouraged to apply, particularly students with economic hardship, limited opportunities for journalism training, and those who have overcome adversity. Journalism experience is not required, but you should have good writing skills, a willingness to learn and a sincere desire to explore a career in journalism.

The program is limited to 15 students and full participation (including living in a campus dormitory) is required.

The summer workshop is tuition-free. Food and housing accommodations will be provided. Students will be supervised by adults. Those who are accepted must agree to follow a code of conduct.

The 2008 workshop will be held from June 18-28. Applications must be postmarked no later than April 4. Those who are accepted will be notified by April 30.
