From Beth Randolph, Bluegrass Principal

Dear SCAPA Families,

Beth RandolphI trust everyone has had a terrific summer break filled with rest, relaxation, and time with family and friends. As the summer vacation winds down, another exciting time of the year is about to begin – the startup of a new school year. Being a huge rollercoaster fan, I liken this time to being on the brink of that first hill just seconds before the huge drop. The anticipation and excitement is high, with just a hint of anxiety thrown in. Reconnecting with old friends, contemplating new adventures, and buying school supplies are a few of the anticipated events. Wondering what your new teacher will really be like, how difficult the work will be, and meeting and making new friends all create apprehension and a sense of uneasiness. All of these feelings are natural and understandable. Once that downward plunge on the rollercoaster begins, the realization of just how joyful the ride really is sinks in. I hope the same will be said of the upcoming school year.

To relieve some of the stress over new teachers, I am proud to say that all positions have been filled with outstanding candidates. Ms. Karyn Combs will be teaching the dance minors and seventh grade core content arts and humanities class. Ms. Combs returns to SCAPA, Bluegrass after a brief stint of just working with the SCAPA, Lafayette students. Ms. Kelly Waterbury Gunn will assume the fourth grade language arts position. Ms. Gunn previously taught primary grades at Stonewall for nine years, but has a love of writing, reading, and the infusion of the arts in her classroom. Mr. Keith Lindsey comes to us after an eleven-year stint at Squires Elementary teaching fifth grade. His responsibility of teaching fifth grade will remain the same, but the former Hollywood actor looks forward to his acclimation to SCAPA. Mr. Devin Onkst, a familiar face around the school, takes over the sixth grade math job and begins a new adventure with the eighth grade geometry course and seventh grade pre-algebra. In addition to his classroom duties, he will also lead our Math Counts team. Finally, Mike Spaeth will make history come alive as he fills the seventh and eighth grade social studies position. Mr. Spaeth is crossing the country to begin his SCAPA career after teaching five years in Arizona. Let’s extend a warm SCAPA welcome to all of these new folks as they learn what it means to be part of the SCAPA family.

As everyone prepares for August 11th and beyond, remember to watch for opportunities to share your talents. Aladdin is just around the corner and with that many chances to volunteer your time. Plus, our big Innisbrook fundraiser will begin the second week of school. These are just two upcoming events where your help is needed, requested, and desired. Parental involvement benefits the students tremendously. And parents, this gives you a chance to build strong bonds with the other parents and develop an unforgettable affection for the school. So, let’s take that magic carpet ride together to a whole new world where our wondrous school makes it possible for all our kids dreams to come true.

Sincerely,

Beth Randolph

From Vickie Ritchie, LHS Principal

Dear Friends of the Arts,
Vicki RitchieIt’s that time again! This year’s incoming freshmen will be the Class of 2014 and we are excited to welcome them, and our returning upperclassmen, to a new and improved Lafayette facility. Our building and classrooms have been freshly painted and our auditorium has a newly enlarged stage. The stadium is coming along nicely and we are eagerly anticipating our first home game in our new facility – the exact date/game to be determined soon!

We are also proud to welcome the new principal at SCAPA, Ms. Beth Randolph. We know our partnership will continue to be strong between our schools.

The Lafayette PTSA is looking for a new PRESIDENT to guide the group for the upcoming school year (or perhaps two parents would make great co-presidents). Please contact the school office or one of the PTSA officers if you are interested in serving as a leader or member of the PTSA. More contact information is available in the PTSA newsletter coming soon.

Again, welcome to the new school year. I have the SCAPA Back to School Reception on my calendar and can’t wait to see the students perform.

Our Most Powerful Instrument

 by Carolyn Waterbury-Tieman

C. W. TiemanWhenever we have visiting musicians they inevitably ask, “How many of you play an instrument?” Not surprisingly the vast majority of our students raise their hand. The fact is, each of them has an instrument that they have been using, practicing and fine-tuning since birth. It is the most powerful instrument they possess.

This instrument has the potential to express and evoke every human emotion. It’s capacity to conjure images, instill fear, destroy confidence, create hope, provide comfort and proclaim love is unparalleled. The instrument I have described is, of course, the voice.

The voice allows us to vocally express the activity that takes place in our brain. These vocalizations may or may not be verbal, but they allow us to share our thoughts, feelings and experiences. The voice takes what is internal and makes it external making it possible for that which is individual and personal to become public and social.

As with all instruments, the ability to use our voice is governed by the brain. The mind has to think before the voice can speak. So, if you said it, you thought it, even if only for a split second. Therefore, our voice and how we use it are completely under our control.

Sometimes we don’t mean to say what we think and this brings me to the subject of filters. Each of us possesses a set of filters through which information from the brain passes before being emitted from the mouth. We were not born with these filters. They are created as a result of what we have learned through the formal and informal training we receive from our family, community, school, religion, culture and world. While our personal filters are unique to us, commonalities can certainly be observed within groups.

These filters mature and become more numerous and sophisticated with age and experience. Some typical childhood filters include, Always say please and thank you; Don’t talk back to your parents; and Don’t utter four letter words. Older kids may add Speak respectfully to your elders; Certain topics are not to be discussed outside the family; and If you can’t say something nice, don’t say anything at all. Our adult filters become more complex and differ depending on who we are speaking to and the circumstances. Hopefully we have learned, among other things, that while Honesty is the best policy, it doesn’t mean being cruel; and Criticism is more readily received when combined with genuine compliments.

With the start of school rapidly approaching, whether we are parents of elementary, middle, high school or college-age students, now is a good time to check, modify and even change those vocal filters. Take the time to really listen to your own voice, your children’s voices, and the voices (friends, relatives, media, etc.) that your children are exposed to and determine if some alterations are in order.

Ask yourself, “How am I using my voice? What messages am I sending? Are they the messages I intend? What do I want my voice to stand for? What filters do I need to add or eliminate to achieve the results I desire?”

Help your children through this same process of evaluating their voice. Share with them your observations from listening to them speak to you, their siblings, friends, etc. Encourage them to carefully consider how they currently use their voice. How do they want to use their voice? What kind of voice do they want to be known for? What kinds of alterations might they need to make in order to create the voice they desire?

Spend time together reflecting on the impact of the voices from outside your family such as television, internet, movies, print media, peers, school, etc. What messages are these voices conveying? Are they messages that reinforce your family’s values? Are these voices a support or a deterrent in creating the voices you and your family desire? What filters need to be in place to assure that you have control over the impact of these voices?

Our voice is our most powerful instrument. It wields incredible influence, intentionally or unintentionally. That is why it is essential that we think before we speak – that we speak to invite understanding, to build and strengthen relationships, to inspire excellence. “There is no index of character so sure as the voice.” - Benjamin Disraeli.

Prior to her role as SCAPA Arts Facilitator, Carolyn Waterbury-Tieman was a Parent/Family Life Educator and licensed Marriage and Family Therapist. She was the author of The Parents’ Toolbox for The Lexington Family Magazine as well as Pastoral Parenting for the Church of the Resurrection newsletter.

When his fellow reporters rush out to get the next big story, it falls right into his lap. Actually it crawls through the window, but who cares about the details. Earl Williams has escaped being hung for a murder he swears was an accident. Johnson decides to help him in exchange for an exclusive interview, but where to hide him? Enter the unscrupulous managing editor, Walter Burns, who would do just about anything to keep Johnson on at the paper. Macbeth: A Cautionary Tale

Adapted by Nancy Linehan Charles

Beeler Auditorium, Lafayette High School

“By the pricking of my thumbs, Something wicked this way comes.” Witness Shakespeare’s Scottish tragedy told in a manner that both instructs and entertains. While actors speak and portray the Bard’s words, storytellers provide insightful (and often comic) commentary on the plot and escalating action. This play preserves some of Shakespeare’s most elegant passages as well as the nature of this century’s old story, but makes it understandable to audiences of all ages. This is Macbeth like you have never imagined it before! “Double, double toil and trouble, Fire burn and cauldron bubble.”

Tracy Turnblad is a plump teenager in Baltimore, Maryland in 1962 with big hair and big dreams. She longs to be a dancer on The Corny Collins Show. When she is dropped from the audition because of her size, she refuses to let rejection deter her. Armed with unwavering drive and indubitable talent, not to mention the power of loving, supportive parents and a devoted friend, Tracy forges ahead. Just try sitting still through this toe-tapping, finger-snapping musical commentary on social injustice and see why when it’s right, ‘you can’t stop the beat!’

Alumni News

Alumni! We Want To Know What You Are Doing!

We would like to make plaques to hang outside each of the arts rooms with the names of graduates and what they are doing professionally. Mr. Love has one on the wall just outside his door. Every year he takes his new 4th graders out in the hall, reads the names of past students and what they are doing, and tells the current students that if they dedicate themselves to their work, someday their name will be on the plaque. This is a great motivator! We want every arts teacher to have the opportunity to do the same thing. Please send me your name, year you graduated, major and what you are doing professionally so that we can expand and maintain this tradition. My address is carolyn.tieman@fayette.kyschools.us. We are looking forward to hearing from you and celebrating your success.

Arts Facilitator Seeking Alumni Liaison

The first fourth grade SCAPA class was established at Harrison Elementary School in 1987 which means (if my math is correct) that the first SCAPA class graduated in 1996. Therefore, we have fourteen years worth of SCAPA alumni families. This is an essential group that needs representation. I would like to invite any SCAPA alumni student or parent to serve as our alumni liaison. If you are interested in volunteering in this capacity, please contact me, carolyn.tieman@fayette.kyschools.us, so we can begin exploring how we can better stay connected to and serve this population. This could be one person or a committee, so do not fail to volunteer because you figure someone else already has. I look forward to hearing from you.

SCAPA FUNdraising Opportunities

Box Tops For Education

General Mills Corporation, sponsor of the Box Tops For Education program, has been involved in giving to educational programs since 1996. Over the past 13 years, participating schools have earned over $300 million dollars in funding. The Box Tops program is a simple way for our school to receive money without having to write grants, sell products, work hours, or buy things we don’t want or need. As a parent, relative, or friend of SCAPA, all you have to do is clip the “Official Box Top Coupon” off of the products you already buy and use. A complete list of these products can be found at boxtops4education.com. After clipping, send the box tops to school with your student. Each homeroom teacher has a container in their classroom for collection. Each month, the box tops are collected and counted, with the top collecting homeroom earning a prize. Come on SCAPA Penguins, keep clipping and collecting those box tops. Let’s make this an awesome box tops year.

Volunteer Opportunities

Please download a copy for each of the FCPS approved volunteers in your family. Completed forms may be turned in to Ms. Barbara Talbert at the front office of Bluegrass SCAPA. Thank you so much for your commitment to making SCAPA great!

Please be aware that a records check is required in order to participate in volunteer activities in the Fayette County School system.
