From the President Terri McGraw

Hello SCAPA friends!

Terri McGrawWell, winter is obviously upon us! We have had another successful month. I hope you were able to attend and enjoy “Aladdin” at the Opera House and/or “The Front Page” at Beeler Auditorium. We would like to THANK our celebrity guests who headed up the Prince Ali Parade in "Aladdin." Many THANKS to Stu Silberman, Marilyn Cunningham, Mrs. Holmes, Mrs. Swain & Ms. Randolph. Incredible performances by all! A huge thank you to the teachers who work so tirelessly with these kids to make this all happen. It could also not be done without the volunteer efforts of all you parents. Thank you.

With many performances under our belts, it's time for winter concerts!

Don't miss the band, strings & vocal concerts! The holiday lunch band concert will be held on Dec 15th for both lunches. The band will also perform at Lafayette on December 9th at 7:30pm. Also the chorus will perform with the Lexington Philharmonic in Candy Cane Concert at the Singletary Center on Friday, December 10th at 8pm & December 12th at 3pm. My, what busy people!

Let's not forget Speech Team! Already winners!! Go Penguins!

A Special Thanks to the “Rainbow Theatre” group from Oregon for coming into our school & helping our dancers prepare for a special dance that will be performed at Dance SCAPA.

Please keep in mind AMAZON on-line during your holiday shopping. AMAZON sells much more than books and our school earns money from these sales.

There is a box in the hallway for personal care items for our troops. They are looking for items such as: baby powder, gum, mints, tea, cocoa, etc.

Please check your closet for any slightly used coats. Ms. Stayton is collecting winter coats for Hart's Dry Cleaning to help those who are in need! Please send coats to school to room #224.

Bundle up for the winter in a nice new SCAPA Sweatshirt for sale during the school events!
Have a fabulous winter break and thank you for everything you do for our kids!

Hope to see you around school!

From Beth Randolph, Bluegrass Principal

Dear SCAPA Family,

It is hard to believe that half of the school year is almost behind us. For me these months have been a learning experience that I will Beth Randolphremember always. Everyone in our school community has been so gracious and accepting of me in this new role, and I am most grateful. These months have also been eye-opening as I have watched with pride as our students continue to amaze me with their uncompromising desire to do what is right and good artistically and academically. In this season of gift-giving, it is gratifying to realize that our students are appreciative of their talents and with hard work continue to nurture and build them into greater assets, just waiting to be used for the good of our society.

In developing these talents, many activities and events have occurred over the past weeks showcasing the students’ skills. Channel 13 has been so kind and accommodating to videotape many of these events and they are now airing. A complete listing of these performances can be found at http://webapps.fcps.net/edtv/ . This unbelievable service provided by Fayette County Public Schools allows us to preserve and relive SCAPA moments over and over and throughout the holidays. I hope many of you will get a chance to view the recitals and concerts shown. They certainly show the community SCAPA’s mission.

As we wind down toward a much-deserved break, I wish a safe and happy holiday season for everyone in our SCAPA family. Rest time and associations with immediate family and friends outside of school helps rejuvenate all of us. We have much wonderful work to accomplish in 2011 and I look forward with anticipation to what the new year will bring for our school and every student associated with it.

Happy holidays,

Beth Randolph

From Vicki Ritchie, LHS Principal

Dear Parents,

Vicki RitchieJuniors will take the ACT here at Lafayette on March 15, 2010. In order to prepare for the test, all juniors have access to an ACT online prep course. All students can use the program at home at any time, but our juniors, in particular, should be using this program regularly to practice answering questions similar to those on the ACT. In order to find out more about this free program, please see our webpage under the TCA ACT Parent Letter heading or call our counseling office.

We also have several Saturday sessions set up in January for students to come to the school and have an ACT test-like practice session. There are teachers available to help students and, again, it is FREE. This program has helped students in the past make very strong gains in their ACT scores. Please do not wait until the last minute to prepare! More information about the sessions is on our website.

Sophomores took the PLAN test (a precursor to the ACT) this fall. Our sophomores placed first or second out of the city schools in all categories!! We are very proud of our students! You should have received your sophomore’s PLAN scores by mail. If you did not, please call the counseling office.

AOP

For the Holidays and Every Day

by Carolyn Waterbury-Tieman

C. Tieman

This morning, as I walked through the first snow of the year, I noticed the quiet stillness created by the gently falling flakes. No other form of precipitation produces this effect. Only snow. My senses were heightened. Noises sounded crisper. I could hear the flakes landing on the leaves. Images seemed clearer. Every branch and tree - the detail of every house was outlined. I could smell and taste the cold. I felt like a part of the landscape.
So much in our high-tech, artificial lifestyle deceives, alters, dampens, or overpowers our senses. There is so much light, we can’t see the stars. So much noise, we can’t hear the birds sing. So many aromas, we can’t smell the flowers. So much to do, we don’t notice.
Well, the holidays are upon us. We are in the midst of a season that is meant to inspire us to reaffirm our beliefs, strengthen our families, and dedicate ourselves to making this world we have been entrusted with a better place. We are each endowed with the power to do these very things. But we have to recognize and choose to do so. Like Scrooge, we are challenged to wake up and discover that humankind is our business.
Each and every day of the year we are given chances to make real, beneficial, lasting differences in the lives of those around us in both discreet and obvious ways. But first, we have to notice. We have to be paying attention.
We have to:

  • Listen carefully
  • Look closely
  • Smell attentively
  • Taste mindfully
  • Feel deeply
  • Speak softly
  • Touch gently
  • Act thoughtfully
  • Live gracefully
  • Live gratefully

My gift to you this season is a song - one from my favorite holiday album with John Denver and the Muppets, A Christmas Together. The words and music were written by Dan Wheetman and are performed by Kermit the Frog. The message is for all of us.

The Christmas Wish

I don’t know if you believe in Christmas,
Or if you have presents underneath the Christmas tree.
But if you believe in love, that will be more than enough for you to come and celebrate with me.
For I have held the precious gift that love brings,
Even though I never saw a Christmas star.
I know there is a light,
I have felt it burn inside and I have seen it shining from afar.
Christmas is the time to come together,
A time to put all differences aside.
And I reach out my hand to the family of man to share the joy I feel at Christmastime.
For the truth that binds us all together,
I would like to say a simple prayer,
That at this special time,
We will have true peace of mind and love to last throughout the coming year.
And if you believe in love,
That will be more than enough,
For peace to last throughout the coming year
And peace on earth will last throughout the year.

Whatever holiday you are celebrating, may the love, joy and peace of the season be with you and yours throughout the coming year.

Prior to her role as SCAPA Arts Facilitator, Carolyn Waterbury-Tieman was a Parent/Family Life Educator and licensed Marriage and Family Therapist. Middle School Majors Band Recital

The middle school band majors had a new kind of performance event a week ago. For the first time ever, Mrs. Barker and Dr. Akel had a performance featuring just the middle school band majors. It was a great success! Band majors played solos, duets, and ensembles to showcase pieces they had been practicing. Dick Simpson, Channel 13, recorded the event while parents and friends watched. A lovely reception
followed the performances.

Art Lease at the Bodley-Bullock House

On Friday, November 19th, SCAPA’s art department participated in the Gallery Hop downtown. The prominent Bodley-Bullock House, located in the heart of downtown Lexington at 200 Market Street across from the Carnegie Center for Literacy and Learning, featured 96 pieces of artwork created by our fourth through eighth graders. The crowd that perused the exhibit was terrific and we leased 33 of those pieces that night. In addition to the pieces leased immediately, some good contacts were made and we are hoping some more pieces will be leased in the next few weeks. Excellent work Mr. Love, Mrs. Rizzo, and all the art students. - Ms. Randolph

Vocal Concert

Last Thursday, the vocal music students put on a magnificent concert. The event was extremely well attended, packing the entire multi-purpose room. Both the fourth and fifth grade choruses sang several songs to begin the show and then the elementary and middle school majors took over. In addition to these fine performances, the sixth grade class superbly played a couple of songs on the Orff instruments and the vocal minors sang beautifully as well. Channel 13 taped the event and it will air for the first time on Wednesday, December 8 at 11:00 A.M. Candace James, Fayette County Public School’s Gifted and Talented Coordinator, accompanied the students playing the flute on several pieces. Mrs. Fields directed all the songs and she and LuAnn Farrar, former SCAPA parent, shared piano accompaniment duties. Congratulations vocal students and Mrs. Fields for representing our school so well.

Combined Piano and Strings Concert a Great Success

What an exciting piano and strings concert last Thursday evening! The students amazed everyone in the well-attended audience. The piano students performed duets and accompanied the strings students with their pieces. In addition to these pieces, the strings students also performed many of their solo and ensemble competition pieces. A lovely reception preceded the concert, giving everyone in attendance a chance to relax and enjoy each other’s company before the magnificent music began. Fantastic work Mrs. Campbell and Mr. Gillespie!

Pilgrims Progress to SCAPA

As a culminating event for their study of the early colonists, Mr. Lindsey's fifth-grade class attempted to make butter and applesauce from scratch. They learned a valuable lesson regarding the labor intensive nature of life in Colonial Days. The students were invited to come in period clothing which added to the authenticity of the experience. Thank you for keeping history alive, Mr. Lindsey!

Pilgrim Parade

UK Collage Concert

Over the weekend of December 4th and 5th, the Singletary Stage was filled with vocal and instrumental musicians performing their annual holiday Collage Concert. The event features the UK Choirs with guest ensembles and soloists including the Lexington Singers' Children's Chorus. It was truly a spectacular show and left the audience full of the spirit of the season. What made it particularly exciting for me was the inclusion of SCAPA students ranging from 4th grade through college being conducted by two SCAPA parents.

SCAPA Student Selected as Epic New Voice

Sarah FannonSarah Fannon, sophomore creative writing major, was notified that she is a winner of the 2010 Epic New Voices Young Writer's Competition. Sarah received an Honorable Mention for her poetry. This is an international competition open to middle and high school students. Her poem is scheduled to be published in an anthology of winning entries. Congratulations, Sarah!

The End of the World
Gazing out my window, waiting
for the world to end.
Chained to the spot where I’ll rest
until it nears.
The soft voice of my conscious murmurs
doubts inside my head.
My life has been short but I’m ready
to depart.
Letters to all I hold dear are scattered
on my floor.
They disguise the actual pain
and the genuine hurt.
A shooting star soars like an eagle across
the darkened sky.
It’s a marvel beyond any seen
before this last day.
Forward is the only direction left to go
if I am to rise.
I shout my final words and
raise my arms.
The time has come and I am
prepared.
Though my eyes are opened,
the world goes dark.
- Sarah Fannon

Alumni! We Want To Know What You Are Doing!

We would like to make plaques to hang outside each of the arts rooms with the names of graduates and what they are doing professionally. Mr. Love has one on the wall just outside his door. Every year he takes his new 4th graders out in the hall, reads the names of past students and what they are doing, and tells the current students that if they dedicate themselves to their work, someday their name will be on the plaque. This is a great motivator! We want every arts teacher to have the opportunity to do the same thing. Please send me your name, year you graduated, major and what you are doing professionally so that we can expand and maintain this tradition. My address is carolyn.tieman@fayette.kyschools.us. We are looking forward to hearing from you and celebrating your success.

SCAPA FUNdraising Opportunities

Continuous SCAPA FUNdraisers

There are 3 ways that you can financially support SCAPA all year long with minimal effort!

  • When you shop at Amazon.com, use the icon on the front page of the FOAS website, www.friends-scapa.org, and SCAPA gets money for every order you make!
  • Purchase a SCAPA Kroger card from Miranda Hines, 351-4931, mhines@email.uky.edu. Use your SCAPA Kroger card!
  • Put a sandwich-sized baggy on your refrigerator door. Clip Box Tops for Education and put them in the bag. Turn your bag of Box Tops into your child’s homeroom each month!

Remember that when you contribute to SCAPA it benefits every student, grades 4-12, in every arts area. You can make a difference!

Box Tops For Education

General Mills Corporation, sponsor of the Box Tops For Education program, has been involved in giving to educational programs since 1996. Over the past 13 years, participating schools have earned over $300 million dollars in funding. The Box Tops program is a simple way for our school to receive money without having to write grants, sell products, work hours, or buy things we don’t want or need. As a parent, relative, or friend of SCAPA, all you have to do is clip the “Official Box Top Coupon” off of the products you already buy and use. A complete list of these products can be found at boxtops4education.com. After clipping, send the box tops to school with your student. Each homeroom teacher has a container in their classroom for collection. Each month, the box tops are collected and counted, with the top collecting homeroom earning a prize. Come on SCAPA Penguins, keep clipping and collecting those box tops. Let’s make this an awesome box tops year.

Volunteer Opportunities

Please download a copy for each of the FCPS approved volunteers in your family. Completed forms may be turned in to Ms. Barbara Talbert at the front office of Bluegrass SCAPA. Thank you so much for your commitment to making SCAPA great!

Please be aware that a records check is required in order to participate in volunteer activities in the Fayette County School system.
