From Marilynn Cunningham, Bluegrass Principal

Dear SCAPA Families:

ML CunninghamBuilding relationships with parents and working with parents offers a base of support for our students to succeed. I am thankful to all our parents who take a lead role in making SCAPA Bluegrass a successful, high performing school. Remember, if you are a parent, you are automatically a member of our Friends of the Arts (FOAS). Do you want to become more involved than you are? You are invited to do so.

Would you like to volunteer in our classrooms? We have students who would welcome extra assistance. Would you like to volunteer at the front desk? We have staff members and parents who invite another person to assist with the front office issues. Let us know by calling the school at 381-3332. We will connect you to the right place or person.

On February 12, 2010, we will host the “Young at Heart” band at lunch. They play big band music. Please bring a brown bag and come join us. We would love to have you. Arrive between 10:55-11:23 for middle school lunch and 11:30 – 11:55 for elementary lunch. Leading up to this event, Social Dance lessons will be at 7:00 on February 2 and February 9. If you have not signed up, it is not too late. This is for anyone in the family.

I am looking forward to Dance SCAPA on February 26 and 27. I will see you there.

Stay connected--Keep the Arts in our Hearts!

If you need help as a parent, remember, I am an email (marilynn.cunningham@fayette.kyschools.us) or phone call (859) 381-3332 away. Don’t hesitate to contact me. If we work together, it offers a structure within which your student may accomplish great things.

From Vickie Ritchie, LHS Principal

Dear Friends of the Arts
Vicki RitchieAs we roll into February, I am so looking forward to Dance SCAPA. All that energy and talent shining onstage will warm up the cold, snowy days. Speaking of snow, we have two days to make up for our snow days in January. We will go to school on February 12 (B-day) and March 5 (A-day).

Also, please make note of March 9. On that day our juniors will take the ACT. Our sophomores will take an ACT diagnostic test. Our seniors will be completing a job-shadowing activity and our freshmen will participate in career clusters activities. Ninth, tenth and eleventh grade parents should have received a letter recently detailing our plans to help students prepare for the ACT (March 9) and the PLAN test (given to 10th graders each fall). Please encourage your student to work on the TCA online prep program at home or sign them up for a Saturday session here at LHS. This information is detailed on the webpage, also.

Our students are planning and participating in several activities and projects to raise money to support the relief effort in Haiti. We are so proud of the humanitarian efforts of our young people. Please watch our website later this month for a report on their progress.

With warm thoughts,
Vicki Ritchie

The Marriage-Parenting Connection

by Carolyn Waterbury-Tieman

As Valentine's Day rolls around again, I find myself reflecting on love relationships in general and marriage in particular. You may be wondering, "Why is she writing about marriage? This is supposed to be a parenting column." The answer is simple. The model for marriage (or any long-term committed relationship) we provide for our children has implications for generations to come.

The intricate connection between marriage and parenting can perhaps best be illustrated by comparing a family to a mobile. If you have ever observed a mobile, you have probably noticed that all the connections make it impossible to touch one piece without moving all the others. Some may teeter wildly while others barely quiver, but they all move. The same is true of families. What affects a person in one relationship will affect all of their other relationships. In short, your parenting will be affected by how things are going in your marriage and vice versa.

I have been puzzling over the question of why we assume dating and courtship are active and stimulating, and marriage is passive and routine. Most wedding ceremonies are chock full of action words - promises to love, honor, cherish, support, take care of, nurture, grow with. So far, I haven't been to a wedding in which one of the vows is, "I promise to become less attractive, less affectionate, uncommunicative, distant and to take thee for granted for as long as we both shall live."

Today many couples will invest more time, energy, thought, and money on planning and preparing for their wedding day than they will ever spend on their relationship again. Maybe we need to require that couples be married for at least a year, better yet five years, before they get a wedding. If only we were as committed to creating lifelong, satisfying relationships as we are to throwing perfect weddings. Then maybe all our talk about the importance, value, and even sacredness of marriage would be more than just talk.

One of the most common excuses for a marriage gone stale is lack of time. Well, I'm here to tell you that courting couples have the same twenty-four hours in their day as married couples. Courting couples are often full-time students who hold jobs, or are employed full-time, or (and this is becoming more common) employed full-time and have children. Married couples who complain of having no time for each other seem to have time for talking on the phone, texting, doing lunch, going shopping, and playing sports with friends or co-workers.

Clearly, what has changed are a couple's priorities, not the amount of time available. When you care about someone, you make time to let them know it. If only couples would work as hard to keep each other as they did to get each other in the first place. The key word here being "work."

Unfortunately, a significant portion of the married population does not believe that marriage is something that needs to be worked at. We appear to be under the false impression that the desire to be courted is extinguished with marriage. It's not! I haven't met a person yet who doesn't enjoy being appreciated, flattered, surprised, respected, cherished, hugged and kissed. But I've met more than my share who long for these.

I assume that every one of us who has ever been involved in a committed relationship knows how to court. We must have been fairly good at it at one time. There is no good reason for stopping. Think back to what you did to put that twinkle in your partner's eye, and do it again. Remember that it doesn't have to be expensive to be meaningful. Expressing appreciation, noticing when someone looks especially attractive, leaving notes, holding hands, calling just to say hello...all those little things we did when we were courting are just as important now as they were then.

As a culture, we are in love with falling in love. Unfortunately, this obsession with falling in love is not conducive to long-term committed relationships such as marriage. But perhaps it could be if we changed the rules a bit.

We tend to believe that falling in love with a person can happen only once. Then when you fall out of love with that person, you move on to the next. The fact is, you don't have to fall out of love to fall in love.

I have personally fallen in love on numerous occasions with the same man--my husband of nearly 25 years. Each time has been different, surprising, exciting, and deeply satisfying.

Remember, falling in love is easy. Staying in love is the real challenge. Relationships that last involve two people who spend a lifetime falling in love with one another.

So that is my wish for this Valentine's Day. May you find reasons and look for opportunities to fall in love with one another over and over for as long as you both shall live. You and your children will reap the rewards of your commitment.

Normandi Ellis – Writing Workshop For SCAPA Writers and Artists

By Samara Pohl

Throwing paper boxes on the ground may not be exactly what one thinks of when Egypt is the topic of conversation. For famous Kentucky writer Normandi Ellis, however, this is just another technique to get ideas out. Thanks to the 2020Vision Visiting Artist Grant, the SCAPA Creative Writers, accompanied by some Art Majors as well, invited Ms. Ellis to visit and share her knowledge of Egyptian Myths. Somewhat confused when she handed them paper shaped as a cross with six squares marked out, the group got into their first activity. Writing different stages of a Creation Myth of their own making on each square and taping the sides together formed dice. Once finished, the group lined up and dropped the dice to the ground and read the faces showing. Sometimes cohesive, sometimes not, the different people and different stories formed fun and funny myths. Sadly, the bell interrupted, and while some stayed and some moved on to their next class, Ms. Ellis prepared her next activity. Having recently visited Egypt, Ms. Ellis had obtained many wonderful pictures of the places associated with all the great myths of Ancient Egyptians. She shared a slideshow with the group and then proceeded to her next activity. This time after she gave out instructions for the construction of a poem, the group wrote “Becoming…” pieces. These described the feelings and thoughts of someone becoming an animal, plant, thing, or god. Simplistic and beautiful, many of these poems were proud works of their creator. Even after she left, the myths and gods floated around on the third floor, prompting more poems of that nature. The SCAPA Creative Writers have created an anthology of different poems and art which was inspired by the Normandi Ellis visit.

The Arts Roundtable is a place where we can share valuable information about the essential role of the arts in our lives and the lives of our children. (Please submit items to Carolyn Waterbury-Tieman, carolyn.tieman@fayette.kyschools.us, by the 20th of each month.)

  • Taken from Dr. McCorvey's recent article in the Lexington Herald Leader about keys to success:
    • Enjoy what you do. If you don't enjoy what you do, do something else because life is too short.
    • Surround yourself with positive spirits.
    • Celebrate the amazing talents of others.
    • Be patient, be persistent and pray constantly.
    • Don't try to do things that aren't in your skill set.
    • Work harder than anyone else at the things you do well.
    • Engage people who have skills you don't have and collaborate with them.
    • The more collaborative you are, the more you can achieve.
    • Engage your community in every way possible.
    • Find the good and praise it. (A tip from his friend Alex Haley, the late author of Roots.)
    • Stay away from 'energy vampires.'
    • Embrace your fears and go with them.
    • Stay focused on your dreams and goals. Stop doing things that don't support them.
    • Be good and kind to everyone; you never know when it might come back to you.
    • When a door closes, a window opens. Some doors should close; celebrate that.
    • Expect good things, and look forward to the next opportunity for something special to happen.

Alumni News

Alumni! We Want To Know What You Are Doing!

We would like to make plaques to hang outside each of the arts rooms with the names of graduates and what they are doing professionally. Mr. Love has one on the wall just outside his door. Every year he takes his new 4th graders out in the hall, reads the names of past students and what they are doing, and tells the current students that if they dedicate themselves to their work, someday their name will be on the plaque. This is a great motivator! We want every arts teacher to have the opportunity to do the same thing. Please send me your name, year you graduated, major and what you are doing professionally so that we can expand and maintain this tradition. My address is carolyn.tieman@fayette.kyschools.us. We are looking forward to hearing from you and celebrating your success.

Arts Facilitator Seeking Alumni Liaison

The first fourth grade SCAPA class was established at Harrison Elementary School in 1987 which means (if my math is correct) that the first SCAPA class graduated in 1996. Therefore, we have fourteen years worth of SCAPA alumni families. This is an essential group that needs representation. I would like to invite any SCAPA alumni student or parent to serve as our alumni liaison. If you are interested in volunteering in this capacity, please contact me, carolyn.tieman@fayette.kyschools.us, so we can begin exploring how we can better stay connected to and serve this population. This could be one person or a committee, so do not fail to volunteer because you figure someone else already has. I look forward to hearing from you.

SCAPA FUNdraising Opportunities

Box Tops For Education

General Mills Corporation, sponsor of the Box Tops For Education program, has been involved in giving to educational programs since 1996. Over the past 13 years, participating schools have earned over $300 million dollars in funding. The Box Tops program is a simple way for our school to receive money without having to write grants, sell products, work hours, or buy things we don’t want or need. As a parent, relative, or friend of SCAPA, all you have to do is clip the “Official Box Top Coupon” off of the products you already buy and use. A complete list of these products can be found at boxtops4education.com. After clipping, send the box tops to school with your student. Each homeroom teacher has a container in their classroom for collection. Each month, the box tops are collected and counted, with the top collecting homeroom earning a prize. Come on SCAPA Penguins, keep clipping and collecting those box tops. Let’s make this an awesome box tops year.

Volunteer Opportunities

Please download a copy for each of the FCPS approved volunteers in your family. Completed forms may be turned in to Ms. Barbara Talbert at the front office of Bluegrass SCAPA. Thank you so much for your commitment to making SCAPA great!

Please be aware that a records check is required in order to participate in volunteer activities in the Fayette County School system.
