Dear SCAPA Families,
Excitement is the word of the summer. I could not be more pleased and honored to assume the principal position of the greatest school in the world. For those who do not know me, I have been with the school as a fifth grade teacher since the fall of 1988 when the initial group of fourth graders moved into the fifth grade. I still remember the exhilaration I felt when I got that position and it is much the same, if not magnified, as I move downstairs to begin this new endeavor. Along with teaching fifth grade, I have also been one of the speech coaches for the last sixteen years. During that tenure, our team became the legends of speech in the Kentucky High School Speech League’s Junior State Speech Tournament winning more state speech championships than any other school in the state’s history.
Teaching and coaching the SCAPA students has been a delight and privilege. Being the school’s new principal is a dream come true. I enjoyed meeting so many old friends and new families at the reception on June 28th as the spirit of our school came alive. The multipurpose room was transformed into a beautiful expanse filled with magnificent music, exquisite flowers, delicious food, cheerful anticipation, and the warm affection our SCAPA family feels for one another. There is no other school with this kind of spirit and heart and I look forward to the upcoming school year with much anticipation for all that we can accomplish together. Although small in number we are mighty in talent, enthusiasm, desire, and commitment to make our school the best it can be.
As we head into the month of our nation’s birth, we can take some of the lessons our forefathers taught us about succeeding in the face of unlikely odds. Their loyalty to one another, devotion to hard word, and unflinching courage to make our nation independent, fashioned noble dreams into an ever-evolving reality. As we go forward together this year, let’s dream big and take those steps toward it in unison and with pride as we strive to make our school the finest artistic and academic learning environment for all.
Sincerely,
Beth Randolph
Dear Friends of the Arts,
As we approach the hot days of the summer, we are already planning for the beginning of school. Mr. Robbie Sayre is joining our administration team as our new associate principal. He will work with us on welcoming the incoming 9th graders to a Freshman Orientation, scheduled for August 5th. Freshman students may attend a Workshop that day and we will welcome parents to an informational night here at LHS. Freshman students should receive an invitation letter in the middle of July. If not, please contact the school at 381-3474 for more information. We will also have information about August 5th posted to our website later this month.
We are looking forward to another wonderful year in the Arts! The students and staff continue to amaze me with their talents and accomplishments. I can’t wait to see what is in store for 2010-2011!

Keeping the ARTS in HeARTS All Summer
by Carolyn Waterbury-Tieman
Aahhh, summer at last. As a child it was the season that stretched out endlessly ahead of us. Long days in the sun riding a bike, wading barefoot in a stream, swimming in pond or pool, reading outside under the trees and falling asleep to the sounds of tree frogs and crickets wafting in through the open window on a gentle breeze. While your memories of summer may differ from mine, they are nonetheless vivid if you take the time to remember. What memories will our children create this summer? What can we do to make sure their summer is not only memorable, but meaningful as well? A good place to start is with the SCAPA motto, “Keep the ARTS in Your HeARTS.”
Summer is a time for exploration. Our children spend the school year deeply engaged in their art major. However, my experience would suggest that many artistically gifted kids are gifted in more than one art discipline. Encourage them to explore the breadth of their artistic abilities and go outside their comfort zone. If your dancer has an interest in writing, sign her up for a workshop at the Carnegie Center. If your strings player enjoys creating works of art, register him for a class at the Living Arts and Science Center or the Headley-Whitney Museum. If your creative writer would like to be able to dramatize her work, involve her in a drama workshop with the Kentucky Classical Theatre Conservatory, Paragon Musical Theatre or the Lexington Children’s Theatre. If your trombone player likes to sing, contact the Lexington Singers’ Children’s Chorus and find out when auditions are. If your pianist loves to dance, look for a class at one of the many dance schools or groups in town. If your visual artist loves music, arrange for lessons to learn to play an instrument through one of the local music schools or private teachers. We are fortunate to live in a city where the creative and performing arts are accessible to the community. Most of the arts organizations offer programs for children and young people and many of them provide scholarships.
There are also numerous opportunities for families to experience the arts together. Take in a show at the Artboretum in July during Summerfest or audition to be in the family musical at The Lexington Children’s Theatre. Pack a picnic dinner and join the Lexington Philharmonic and the Lexington Singers for their July 3rd patriotic concert at Transylvania. It’s free! Create costumes that reflect your student’s involvement with SCAPA and come march with us in the 4th of July Parade. Design and build a birdhouse as a family project for the Arboretum’s Annual Birdhouse exhibit and silent auction. Visit the UK Art Museum, local galleries or even Artique in Lexington Green or the Civic Center shops just to enjoy the amazing things people create. And of course there is the Woodland Arts Fair in August. Start a family book club and take turns reading the books on your students’ required summer reading list and spend time discussing them. Most of these activities are free, so take advantage of all that is available and make this an art-filled summer.
Tools that help insure our children’s memories will last are a journal, drawing pad and pencil, and a camera. There are many ways to keep a journal. An entry can be anything from a list of words that describe thoughts, feelings or events to a detailed account of the day. Sketching people, places and things serves as a visual diary of experiences. If there is not time to make a sketch, take a picture. Who knows when that journal entry, sketch or photo might inspire a story, play, piece of music, song, dance or work of art?
Finally, pencil in some down time on that busy calendar. Kids need time to just be, doing their favorite thing or nothing at all. We also need time to be a family, doing those things that give us our unique identity and strengthen our relationships. As the principle artists of your dynamic family masterpience, create a summer that you can all enjoy remembering for years to come.

SCAPA Names Randolph Head Principal
Beth Randolph, who has taught fifth grade at SCAPA Bluegrass since 1988, will be the new principal there starting July 1.
Randolph began her teaching career in Fayette County at Harrison Elementary School in the fall of 1987, during the first year of the School for the Creative and Performing Arts' existence. She joined the fledgling magnet school in its second year and has been a fixture in the program as enrollment grew and the school moved from building to building until settling into its permanent home beside Lafayette High School.
The daughter of a Fayette County teacher (mom taught 30 years at Southern Middle) and principal (dad was a principal at Mary Todd Elementary), Randolph admits she initially tried to avoid her calling by earning a degree in accounting.
“When I didn’t have a job by the fall, my father suggested I see if I could get a job as a math tutor,” she said. And a few weeks into her three-year stint as a Chapter 1 math tutor at Cardinal Valley Elementary School, Randolph was hooked. “I loved it and went back to school.”
More than two decades later, Randolph is moved to tears at the thought of stepping into the principal’s role at SCAPA.
“It’s just a dream come true. I was afraid to imagine it because I didn’t want to be disappointed,” she said. “I’ve grown up with SCAPA throughout my whole teaching career. It’s really my home, and I just adore the school.”
Superintendent Stu Silberman had high praise for Randolph.
“Having been at SCAPA for 22 years Beth knows firsthand how to continue the strong tradition of achievement,” he said. “She has proven that everything she touches rises to a high level of excellence.”
Middle School Director Kelley Crain agreed.
“She has tremendous care and concern for students that is demonstrated in her daily work and decisions. Her love for the SCAPA school community and her devotion to students are contagious,” Crain said.
Under Randolph’s stewardship, the SCAPA speech team held the state title for 12 years straight. She hopes to lead the school to that kind of pre-eminence as well.
“I want to see us really be a leader in the county, throughout the state and nationally as well,” she said. “Not only academically, but artistically, too. I’ve seen us do it with the speech team, and I know we can do it with everything.”
Randolph, 49, was named the 2009 Kentucky History Teacher of the Year. She has also been honored as a VFW Citizen Teacher of the Year and was named a semi-finalist in the Kentucky Teacher of the Year competition. She earned her bachelor’s degrees in accounting and elementary education from the University of Kentucky, as well as her master’s in elementary education. She will complete her principal’s certification in August.

FOAS Needs YOU!
The Friends of the Arts School (FOAS) is the organization that supports Bluegrass and Lafayette SCAPA, grades 4-12. There is not much that goes on at SCAPA that does not involve FOAS directly or indirectly. There are countless ways to be involved at SCAPA as a volunteer. If you are a parent or legal guardian of a SCAPA student then you are a member of FOAS. Please take the time to consider what your talents, gifts and strengths are and decide how you can use those to help SCAPA. Contact Terri McGraw, tmcgraw@milestoneky.com or Carolyn Waterbury-Tieman, carolyn.tieman@fayette.kyschools.us, to find out how you can get started. We want and need you to be an involved member!

Extreme Makeovers, Birdhouse Edition
SCAPA is invited, once again, to participate in the annual birdhouse project sponsored by the Arboretum. Students and families are encouraged to use their imaginations to create unique dwellings for our winged friends. The birdhouses will be displayed throughout the Arboretum in September and then auctioned off as a fundraiser for the Arboretum. SCAPA students have won prizes for the past three years for their entries! Let's keep the tradition going. Your student should have brought home a letter and entry form (pdf) in their backpacks recently. Please mark on your entry form that you are a SCAPA family. Let the sky be the limit and have fun!

SCAPA Community Welcomes Principal Randolph
On the evening of Monday, June 28, more than 200 people came out to congratulate and welcome Miss Beth Randolph as the new principal of Bluegrass SCAPA. With the help of the custodial staff, parents and students the Multipurpose Room was transformed into an elegant reception hall with fresh flowers, candles, white tableclothes and a lovely assortment of food. The district provided two cakes and punch to top off the celebration. There was an atmosphere of warmth, camaraderie and optimism as we look to the future under the leadership of someone who has been with SCAPA since the second year of its inception.
The evening was highlighted with music by the following string majors under the direction of Ms. Nancy Campbell: Dylan Rowe, Hitomi Shimojo, Katie Jones, Robert Wendroth, Sarah Takahashi, Logan Rowe, Michael Takahashi, Madison Jones, Azure Rowe and Bailey Yates; AND the following band majors under the direction of Ms. Robin Barker and Dr. Karen Akel: Hallie Walther, Shitomi Shimojo, Megan Leiter, Luke Leiter, Holly Bennett, Hope Bennett, Bruce Cotton, Will Lovan, Danny Alford, Olivia Douglas and Maddie Stone.
The Friends of the Arts School presented Miss Randolph with an engraved vase to commemorate this momentous occasion. May this mark a new era of excellence for SCAPA!

Senior Awards and Plans
On June 4, 2010 at Rupp Arena in downtown Lexington the following Lafayette SCAPA seniors received their diplomas. Take a few minutes to appreciate all that these young people accomplished during high school and see what exciting futures our graduates have in store. Congratulations to each of you and please stay in touch now that you are SCAPA alumni!
In addition to having 8 of the top 10 students (based on academic standing), SCAPA seniors also received $3.95 million in scholarships. WOW! We certainly have a great deal to be proud of and we wish the Class of 2010 all the best in their future endeavors. May the arts continue to inspire and enrich their lives!

Kudos for Ashlie Beals
Ashlie Beals, who teaches science in grades 6-8 at SCAPA Bluegrass, and has been awarded a continuing professional development scholarship from the Kentucky Association of Professional Educators. For several years Beals has been working part-time on her doctorate in Instruction and Administration at the University of Kentucky. With her advisor, she published an article in the January 2010 edition of Science Scope magazine. Beals also presented a paper, co-authored with her UK advisor and a fellow graduate student, to the Mid-Atlantic Association of Science Teacher Educators. “Deepening my content understanding and studying in-depth, current research topics in science education have directly influenced how I teach my students,” said Beals, who wants kids to understand what it means to be a lifelong learner.
Jonathan Karp Select to Bezos Scholars Program
Congratulations to Jonathan Karp, Lafayette SCAPA senior strings major, for being selected as one of the 2010 scholars in the BEZOS SCHOLARS PROGRAM at THE ASPEN INSTITUTE. Alumni! We Want To Know What You Are Doing!
We would like to make plaques to hang outside each of the arts rooms with the names of graduates and what they are doing professionally. Mr. Love has one on the wall just outside his door. Every year he takes his new 4th graders out in the hall, reads the names of past students and what they are doing, and tells the current students that if they dedicate themselves to their work, someday their name will be on the plaque. This is a great motivator! We want every arts teacher to have the opportunity to do the same thing. Please send me your name, year you graduated, major and what you are doing professionally so that we can expand and maintain this tradition. My address is carolyn.tieman@fayette.kyschools.us. We are looking forward to hearing from you and celebrating your success.
Arts Facilitator Seeking Alumni Liaison
The first fourth grade SCAPA class was established at Harrison Elementary School in 1987 which means (if my math is correct) that the first SCAPA class graduated in 1996. Therefore, we have fourteen years worth of SCAPA alumni families. This is an essential group that needs representation. I would like to invite any SCAPA alumni student or parent to serve as our alumni liaison. If you are interested in volunteering in this capacity, please contact me, carolyn.tieman@fayette.kyschools.us, so we can begin exploring how we can better stay connected to and serve this population. This could be one person or a committee, so do not fail to volunteer because you figure someone else already has. I look forward to hearing from you.

Box Tops For Education
General Mills Corporation, sponsor of the Box Tops For Education program, has been involved in giving to educational programs since 1996. Over the past 13 years, participating schools have earned over $300 million dollars in funding.
The Box Tops program is a simple way for our school to receive money without having to write grants, sell products, work hours, or buy things we don’t want or need. As a parent, relative, or friend of SCAPA, all you have to do is clip the “Official Box Top Coupon” off of the products you already buy and use. A complete list of these products can be found at boxtops4education.com. After clipping, send the box tops to school with your student. Each homeroom teacher has a container in their classroom for collection. Each month, the box tops are collected and counted, with the top collecting homeroom earning a prize. Come on SCAPA Penguins, keep clipping and collecting those box tops. Let’s make this an awesome box tops year.
Please download a copy for each of the FCPS approved volunteers in your family. Completed forms may be turned in to Ms. Barbara Talbert at the front office of Bluegrass SCAPA. Thank you so much for your commitment to making SCAPA great!
Please be aware that a records check is required in order to participate in volunteer activities in the Fayette County School system.
