From the President Terri McGraw

Hello SCAPA friends!

Terri McGrawMy name is Terri McGraw and I am very excited to be the President of the Friends of the Arts School (FOAS or FRIENDS) for the 2010-2011 school year. I have twin girls at SCAPA who will be in the 8th grade. They have been at SCAPA since the 4th grade and are both ballet majors/visual art minors. Like most of you, we have a lot of dancing, acting and art work around our home.

This year, the school is looking forward to a very exciting year of productions and activities. We hope that each of you can find a fun way to participate that will help make this the best year ever. Please read through this newsletter to secure dates and times on your fall calendar for both you and your student.

We will have different faces at our school this coming year since our principal - Marilynn Cunningham, 4th grade teacher - Mrs. Holmes, & 7th/8th grade teacher - Ms. Swain are retiring. We will miss them greatly and wish them the BEST!

For those of you who will be in town during July 4th - SCAPA will be participating in the 4th of July parade on Saturday, July 3rd in downtown Lexington. If you want to come and join in the fun, please contact Pam Bishop, pamela.s.bishop@usps.gov

SCAPA's first WHOLE school (INCLUDING SCAPA LAFAYETTE) "get together" is the BACK TO SCHOOL PICNIC on Sunday, August 29th from 2-5pm on the grounds of Bluegrass SCAPA. There will be a Silent Auction, food, outdoor activities for the kids, and much more! This is a fun social event for the students and parents. It helps get us started off on the right foot toward a great year. Put it on your calendar- the kids love it!! If you have anything to donate for the silent auction, please contact Judy Briggs, lbo523@alltel.net

SCAPA is such an incredible place! We are all truly fortunate to be a part of something so wonderful right here in our community.

Always feel free to email me if you need anything!

Looking forward to seeing you around SCAPA!

From Cindy Bennet, Past President

Hey all!

It has been an incredible year here at SCAPA. So many wonderful kids and faculty, what a great school!

The FOAS/ Friends would like to say thank you to all parents who have helped in so many ways this year. We would also like to say thank you to all of the teachers for their undying support and dedication to these kids. SCAPA is a very busy and unique place, let's consider ourselves lucky to be a part of it!

If you missed the performance of Kaleidoscope, IT WAS AWESOME!!! It was a collaborative effort between the different art majors and the wonderful creative minds of the teachers. There was dancing, singing, orchestra music, art, video, you name it, it had it all. It was nice to see the the talents of all students combined in one show. Can't wait for next year!

With the retirement of Mrs. Holmes, Mrs. Swain, and Principal Mrs. Cunningham, things will start off a little different next year, but with the wonderful leadership of the faculty and leadership of the SBDM, everything will continue to run smoothly. All the parents and students will truly miss these wonderful ladies, they have made a huge difference in our children's lives. We just can't say thank you enough for the gifts that they have shared with our children. Not only the gift of knowledge and learning, but friendship and leadership. Thank you, you will be truly missed.

As you know, the FOAS is the organization of all SCAPA parents grades 4th- 12th. It helps raise funds to purchase the needs of SCAPA Bluegrass and SCAPA LHS. During the summer, please remember to save your Box Tops for Education and use our AMAZON portal on the SCAPA home page when making purchases. This way we can keep funds rolling in over the summer.

We will welcome everyone back to school with a full SCAPA 4th-12th Back to School Picnic and Silent Auction on Sunday, August 29th from 2-5pm. We hope to see everyone there! It's a great way to start off the school year and visit with old friends.

Again, let me say a personal thank you to EVERYONE!!! This year couldn't have been done without you!
Thank you , Thank you, Thank you, Thank you, Thank you!!!!
It has been a blast!

Cindy Bennett
Past President FOAS

From Marilynn Cunningham, Bluegrass Principal

Dear SCAPA Families:

ML CunninghamThe end of the year is that time when you run to the finish with the hope you get it all done without being covered with the minutia, the unimportant. It is that time when you prioritize in order to complete the important things at hand. As always, because we are a community around the performing arts, “SCAPA will function in chaos and finish in style.” Much of that function comes from the support of you, our families. Parents and families make the difference between good and great. I appreciate you! I celebrate you! I thank you for helping our SCAPA students and teachers to finish strong and experience the synergy of being great.

For me, the difference in ending this year, 2009-2010, with SCAPA is that it IS the last time I will cross that finish line as your principal. I am really sad and know that I will miss the creative, human spirit that drives this school. The last thing I want to do is have our school in a principal’s search, yet, I have chosen to leave. Does my audio match my video? Not really, but out of respect for you, I will offer my best thinking.

Professionally, I would like to stay. SCAPA is on the right track to continually improve. All of the strategies are in place for a successful school and the culture and climate are at an all time high. This is credited to our students and staff with the Kaleidoscope Performance, Spring Band Concert, Piano Concert and our academic assessments shown through the MAP scores. The eighth grade class is to be commended with their 8th grade showcase performance. Their parting gift to the school was reviewed by many as the strongest all-around performance. I know it does not make sense for me to retire and leave. I know it is not a demonstration of my appreciation to those around me who tirelessly work until their results are the best they can be by adding “one more thing” to their plate, a principal search.”

The bottom line is that SCAPA is designed for success and there are many people who can fill my shoes as principal. At home, I am the only person who can advocate for the legacy of my family. Yes, I know, I have the choice between retiring from SCAPA or staying for another year at SCAPA and working at achieving a better balance between home and family. In leaving, I move out of the way. I offer an opportunity for someone to come in and give your school the 110% that you deserve. This is the best win-win I can create—move out of the way. The way my audio matches the video is that I trust the school leadership in every area, staff, students and families. Every person in this school is a leader. When I say it that way, the video plays out. As I leave, another will take my place. The one who takes my place cannot fail, because I did not fail. This culture is full of leaders who assure the principal’s success because the school is a success. SCAPA’s legacy has moved on track while principals have come and gone. You are the best synergy for student’s learning and I love it! SCAPA will run fine, because of you.

It is my desire to return as a volunteer on the committee to raise money to build a stage. At this time, I am listed on the committee. However, in order to keep my retirement, the district will have to request from the Kentucky Teacher Retirement System using a 30E form that I be allowed to volunteer in this capacity. This request may not be submitted until October 1, 2010. In addition, I must take a break from the SCAPA families, school staff and students for 90 days. This is a KTRS statute and must be honored in order to keep my retirement. I will be around until June 30, 2010. Remember that I am always ready to answer your questions, email me at marilynn.cunningham@fayette.kyschools.us

Have a nice summer and watch our educational TV--Channel 13! Our SBDM meetings will be posted. Our performances will be shown. Check our web site regularly for the beginning of the year announcements. Take care of yourself while keeping the arts in your hearts, appreciation, respect, teamwork and self-discipline. Go Penguins! You are on the move!

Marilynn Cunningham, SCAPA’s Principal

From Vickie Ritchie, LHS Principal

Dear Friends of the Arts,
Vicki RitchieCongratulations on another fantastic year at Lafayette High School! Our students have accomplished so much from winning state competitions to performing with nationally renowned conductors, from painting horses for an international audience to individual and group efforts to raise money for the relief effort in Haiti. You name the topic and we have students excelling in that area.

I want to especially congratulate our seniors of the Class of 2010. I am confident that we will be hearing and reading about their accomplishments for years to come.

Thank you to all the parents and community volunteers who give of their time and money to support our students in the arts. Our school and our city benefit from the enjoyment we get out of the performances and artwork of our students.

Best wishes for a safe and happy summer,

Vicki Ritchie

My SCAPA Pledge

 by Carolyn Waterbury-Tieman

C. W. TiemanOn Friday, May 21st, from 4-7:30pm, I attended two meetings that were called by our SBDM to assist in identifying the desired qualifications for the next Bluegrass SCAPA principal. The first meeting was open to all current faculty and staff. The second meeting was open to all current parents/guardians. For over three hours I listened to what we believe the goals for SCAPA should be and what we want and expect from a new principal in order to achieve those goals.

You know those large oversized pads of paper that people giving presentations write on so that everyone can see? Well, our list filled at least six of those sheets. Basically, all we are asking for is a perfect blend of Mother Teresa, Einstein, Martin Luther King, Jr., Abraham Lincoln and Ghandi mixed with a generous portion of the greatest artists from every discipline.

Saturday morning, during my walk, I reflected on the previous evening. It occurred to me that in all the time we spent meticulously outlining what we want in our new leader, not one of us mentioned what we are willing to do to ensure the future success of SCAPA. How easy it is to rattle off what we think should be the responsibilities of others. But when it comes to claiming ownership for our contribution we are more reluctant to speak up.

The fact is that no matter who becomes principal of SCAPA or how closely they match our profile, they cannot do their job if we are not first doing ours as parents. If students and teachers are the bricks and mortar used to build success upon the framework provided by the administration, then parents are the foundation upon which that success is built. The stronger the foundation, the higher the level of success that can be achieved!

To that end I make the following pledge – to myself, my child, and to SCAPA.

I will:

  • be an active, involved member of the Friends of the Arts School organization.
  • make it clear to my child that attending SCAPA is a privilege and that with
    great privilege comes great responsibility.
  • make my expectations for his behavior clear and realistic ahead of time. Hold him accountable for failure to comply by instituting immediate, thoughtful, relevant consequences that are intended to teach rather than punish.
  • remind him that whenever he is in the community representing SCAPA he is to be on his best behavior and serve as an ambassador for the school.
  • make it clear to him that misbehavior and attention-seeking behavior are not the same thing as creativity or talent.
  • make sure he understands that being artistically gifted/talented does not excuse misbehavior, failure to comply with rules, or disrespectful actions.
  • make sure my child gets the nutrition, rest and exercise he needs.
  • send him to school ready and eager to learn.
  • make sure he knows and practices good manners.
  • get him to school on time and pick him up on time.
  • check his backpack every day, read his agenda and sign it.
  • make sure he completes his homework.
  • make sure my child practices his art form(s) often and well.
  • get him to rehearsals on time and pick him up on time.
  • get him to performances on time and pick him up on time.
  • attend all of my child’s performances.
  • keep open lines of communication with his teachers and communicate with them regularly regarding his progress and behavior.
  • respond promptly and respectfully to any communications from teachers
expressing concern for my child’s progress and/or behavior.
  • work with his teachers to correct and improve any problem areas that may arise.
  • follow the logical chain of command when addressing concerns or problems at school starting with those directly involved in the situation and avoiding the involvement of higher levels of the administration unless absolutely necessary.
  • keep the arts in my heart.
  • dentify the relationship between and reinforce the integration of arts and academics.
  • remind my child that while he is special to his father and me, that does not entitle him to special treatment wherever he goes.
  • model for him those attitudes and behaviors that I expect of him.

Now I have only filled a little over a regular-sized page so far and there is much more I could add. But I think instead I will simply say that I will do whatever I need to do to ensure that there is a mutually beneficial relationship between SCAPA and my family. I want both my son and SCAPA to be successful and by successful I mean to achieve their full potential. And I accept full responsibility for my role in making that happen. I cannot expect more of anyone else and certainly I should not accept less.

Announcements and Reminders

FOAS Needs YOU!

The Friends of the Arts School (FOAS) is the organization that supports Bluegrass and Lafayette SCAPA, grades 4-12. There is not much that goes on at SCAPA that does not involve FOAS directly or indirectly. There are countless ways to be involved at SCAPA as a volunteer. If you are a parent or legal guardian of a SCAPA student then you are a member of FOAS. Please take the time to consider what your talents, gifts and strengths are and decide how you can use those to help SCAPA. Contact Terri McGraw, tmcgraw@milestoneky.com or Carolyn Waterbury-Tieman, carolyn.tieman@fayette.kyschools.us, to find out how you can get started. We want and need you to be an involved member!

The birdhouses will be displayed throughout the Arboretum in September and then auctioned off as a fundraiser for the Arboretum. SCAPA students have won prizes for the past three years for their entries! Let's keep the tradition going. Your student should have brought home a letter and entry form (pdf) in their backpacks recently. Please mark on your entry form that you are a SCAPA family. Let the sky be the limit and have fun!

Ben Sollee ('02) will be a teacher in Mark O'Connor's String Camp this summer. Ben is a creative cellist in the folk, bluegrass and jazz genres. He also has refined a way to strum the cello while accompanying his singing. He plays with Abigail Washburn and Bela Fleck in the Sparrow Quartet. He got his start at age 17 in the Folk Boy Orchestra, of the radio program WoodSongs Old-Time Radio Hour. He has been featured on NPR's All Things Considered and Morning Edition.

Mathew Leonard ('07) was elected President of Vassar Student Association. Congratulations, Matt!

Douglas Waterbury-Tieman ('08) was recently recognized as the Outstanding Junior (The Presser Award/Scholarship) for the School of Music at Belmont University. He will also be portraying William Thomas in the 61st production of Unto These Hills in Cherokee, North Carolina. The production runs from June 4 - August 14, 2010 and is the second oldest outdoor drama in the United States.

Alumni! We Want To Know What You Are Doing!

We would like to make plaques to hang outside each of the arts rooms with the names of graduates and what they are doing professionally. Mr. Love has one on the wall just outside his door. Every year he takes his new 4th graders out in the hall, reads the names of past students and what they are doing, and tells the current students that if they dedicate themselves to their work, someday their name will be on the plaque. This is a great motivator! We want every arts teacher to have the opportunity to do the same thing. Please send me your name, year you graduated, major and what you are doing professionally so that we can expand and maintain this tradition. My address is carolyn.tieman@fayette.kyschools.us. We are looking forward to hearing from you and celebrating your success.

Arts Facilitator Seeking Alumni Liaison

The first fourth grade SCAPA class was established at Harrison Elementary School in 1987 which means (if my math is correct) that the first SCAPA class graduated in 1996. Therefore, we have fourteen years worth of SCAPA alumni families. This is an essential group that needs representation. I would like to invite any SCAPA alumni student or parent to serve as our alumni liaison. If you are interested in volunteering in this capacity, please contact me, carolyn.tieman@fayette.kyschools.us, so we can begin exploring how we can better stay connected to and serve this population. This could be one person or a committee, so do not fail to volunteer because you figure someone else already has. I look forward to hearing from you.

SCAPA FUNdraising Opportunities

Box Tops For Education

General Mills Corporation, sponsor of the Box Tops For Education program, has been involved in giving to educational programs since 1996. Over the past 13 years, participating schools have earned over $300 million dollars in funding. The Box Tops program is a simple way for our school to receive money without having to write grants, sell products, work hours, or buy things we don’t want or need. As a parent, relative, or friend of SCAPA, all you have to do is clip the “Official Box Top Coupon” off of the products you already buy and use. A complete list of these products can be found at boxtops4education.com. After clipping, send the box tops to school with your student. Each homeroom teacher has a container in their classroom for collection. Each month, the box tops are collected and counted, with the top collecting homeroom earning a prize. Come on SCAPA Penguins, keep clipping and collecting those box tops. Let’s make this an awesome box tops year.

Volunteer Opportunities

Please download a copy for each of the FCPS approved volunteers in your family. Completed forms may be turned in to Ms. Barbara Talbert at the front office of Bluegrass SCAPA. Thank you so much for your commitment to making SCAPA great!
