Bluegrass
Letter from Marilynn Cunningham
Dear SCAPA Families:
Wow! It is that time of the year when we complete what we have begun at the beginning. Performances or events are scheduled almost every night. With nine arts areas and their culminating events, knowing the time and place of scheduled events is important. When you begin to put the events on the calendar, you see how busy you will be this month. How can we stay connected and grounded during this busy time? Take time each day to live in the moment, reflect over the year, celebrate what you want to hold on to and let go of what you don’t want to remember.
In the next two weeks, the whole school will be focused on the Kentucky Core Content Assessment. This is a chance for our students to perform what they have learned in their academic classrooms. I am looking forward to their having that opportunity to demonstrate their learning.
Another way to stay connected and knowledgeable about performance events, is to view the SCAPA website on a daily basis. Anything you need to know is on it or linked to it. Our latest addition to the website is the New SCAPA video. View it. You will be inspired. It is well done and produced by our Fayette County Public School’s media services.
Lastly, email us and ask. We are here to serve you. The only way we know what you need is to have you ask. I will be looking forward to seeing you in the month of May at your students' performance.
Stay connected!
Sincerely,
Marilynn Cunningham, Principal
If you need help as a parent, remember, I am an email (marilynn.cunningham@fayette.kyschools.us) or phone call (859) 381-3332 away. Don’t hesitate to contact me. If we work together, it offers a structure within which your student may accomplish great things.
Lafayette
Letter from Vicki Ritchie
Dear Friends of the Arts,
Welcome to spring – what nice weather we have had recently! Students (and teachers) can easily become distracted at this time of year, but so many important things are still going on at Lafayette. We just finished our state testing. The juniors had three days of testing and the sophomores had one day. All the groups did well each day and we appreciate their hard work. I am sure it will translate into many proficient and distinguished scores for our kids.
Students involved in AP classes will be taking their AP exams during the month of May and freshman students will be completing their MAP testing in the computer labs here at school. All students will be preparing for their final exams in their classes.
Parents will attend the Award Programs on May 5 for underclassmen and May 12 for seniors. In addition, parents will vote on the parent SBDM representatives from May 5 through May 7.
Voting will be available at the May 5th awards ceremony.
Again, we are still working hard as a team to help students reach high levels of success. In spite of the wonderful spring weather, we will do our best to keep our focus. Thank you for all of your support as the year winds to a close.
Vicki Ritchie.
Sincerely,
Vicki Ritchie

A Surprise Gift to SCAPA
I wanted to pass along a chance encounter I had recently at work. I met Elaine Wolf. She is more than a proud SCAPA person. She told me great stories about the old building that SCAPA was in, productions, the love of the arts, students that she knows who have moved on to glorious careers, and the love of the creative environment. She also told me about Linda Helm. Elaine was so enthusiastic about what SCAPA brings to not only the individual, but the community. What an incredible person. When she was leaving she said she had something to give to me. She handed me a check for $100.00 to give to FOAS in the memory of Linda W. Helm (for whom Helm Hall is named).
My, how SCAPA works in many ways. We are all very lucky to be associated with such an incredible place.

The program will begin at 7:00 P.M. with a reception to follow. The program will last about an hour to an hour and a half. We are pleased to make this free and open to the public.
On Saturday afternoon at 4:30, May 9th, the SCAPA elementary pianists will be performing at Centenary Methodist Church on Tates Creek Rd. The program will last about 50 minutes. While there will be no reception, it is sure to be a wonderful performance.
On Saturday evening at 7 P.M., May 9th, the SCAPA middle school will present their recital. The program will last about an hour and 40 minutes. Again, there will be no reception, but a wonderful evening of beautiful music. Both Saturday recitals are also free and open to the public.

Arboretum Birdhouse Display and Benefit Auction
The Arboretum has invited our students to create and submit birdhouses for their annual Birdhouse Display and Benefit Auction again this year. Several SCAPA students participated last year and our own Callaway Stivers, a 4th grade visual arts major, won the award for Best Student Birdhouse. This is a fun summertime project for creative kids and families that raises money to benefit The Arboretum. Your student may choose to donate their birdhouse to the silent auction or they may reclaim it after the display period is over.
Entry forms will be coming home in backpacks in the next couple of weeks and will also appear in the next newsletter. Please consider participating in this worthwhile event. We would love to have a great showing of SCAPA birdhouses. I hope to see your student’s entry at the 8th Annual Birdhouse Display in September.

Broadway Bound!
A unique musical theater training opportunity for students in Lexington and surrounding areas. Broadway Bound is proud to provide two streams of training:
Broadway Bound Conservatory:
A performing arts “college” for kids, the conservatory offers a maximum variety of specialized training and classes. Students will be offered “electives” in specialized topics as well as training in the fundamentals of singing, acting, dancing and elements of auditioning, exploring new opportunities, and creation. All students are encouraged to attend this camp, as the skills they gain will be invaluable!
Broadway Bound Performance Camps:
These week-long day camp program offers classes in voice, dance, and drama, culminating in a fantastic broadway-revue final program. Students will have opportunities to learn music from various musical theater productions, to work with talented professionals who will challenge and inspire them, to gain confidence and skill in artistic expression, to become a valuable part of a performing team, and to make new friends in the context of a positive, encouraging, and non-competitive environment.
SCAPA in 4th of July Parade
Believe it or not the 4th of July Parade is just around the corner. I will be glad to do just what we did last year and have SCAPA students, parents, teachers, staff, etc. meet as a group and march in the parade with our banner handing out flyers and candy. However, if there are parents who want a more significant presence, such as a float or truck, I NEED HELP! If there is anyone interested in assisting in this effort I would deeply appreciate it. Please contact me at carolyn.tieman@fayette.kyschools.us or 381-3332 ext. 1102.

Taylor Micajah Bagley, a 6th grader at Scapa Bluegrass, took home a first place Championship win in the 2009 Kentucky State Scholastic Individual Championship, sponsored by the Kentucky Chess Association. The tournament was held in Bowling Green Kentucky on March 14 - 15, 2009. Taylor won a total score of 4.5 out of 5 games and won the State Championship title against 6th, 7th and 8th graders. He has worked very hard to reach this milestone.
He tied for Co-Champion with Andrew Lipman, who received the 2nd place trophy, a Louisville Kentucky Kentucky Country Day student, with both students winning 4.5 games out of 5, but Taylor won the first place title on tie break.

Instead of Sounding Off, Try Listening Up
Enraged because her 9-year-old sister has been in her room again uninvited, your irate 12-year-old daughter storms out to the yard where you are mowing the grass and demands that you do something about, “the dreadful little brat.” Because you are the adult and have learned self-control, you do not scream at her to grow up and stop calling her little sister names. And you resist the temptation to ask, “What’s the big deal about somebody being in your room anyway?”
What you do next goes a long way toward defining what kind of communication skills you impart to your children. In this situation, as in nearly every interaction with our children, we are teaching and modeling our communication skills. Did you know that you can’t avoid communicating? All behavior, both verbal and nonverbal, is communication and conveys a message. So the issue is not whether you’re communicating, but what and how you’re communicating.
Some people think of communication as merely talking, but that’s only part of the process. I once saw a billboard displaying the message, “A big part of loving is listening.” Listening is an essential parenting tool that becomes more and more important as kids become more sophisticated.
It’s important to remember that listening does not signal that you approve of or condone what you are hearing. Nor does it mean that you are giving permission. You are listening in order to acquire the information necessary to respond appropriately. So, how do you communicate with that angry 12-year-old?
Try this. Calmly turn off the mower, gently guide her to the porch, have her count to 10 and then ask her about the problem. You are not interested in hearing all the loathsome qualities of her little sister. You simply want to know the problem.
Once she has defined it, help her brainstorm solutions (any solution is acceptable at this stage of problem-solving). Next, help her choose a solution (this is when you suggest that stuffing her little sister in the closet for a week is not an option), and support her in implementing it. You might roleplay the situation with her so she can practice explaining the solution to her sister. You might even want to be there for the big event to show your support.
Our children’s behavior, the choices they make in friends, music, activities, how they spend their time, communicates a great deal to us about what they need from us if we are “listening.” The fact is, if we are not effective listeners we will not know when or how to best intervene on their behalf. Here are a few suggestions for promoting better communication.
Model open, honest communication. Take the time to accurately identify your feelings before speaking. Are you really mad or are you actually hurt or disappointed? Are you really angry or are you actually scared or embarrassed?
Be sure the message you are sending is the one intended. Match your words with a tone of voice, facial expression and body language that clarify rather than confuse the message you are trying to convey.
Talk with rather than at your children. While nagging, criticizing, threatening, lecturing and ridiculing may be done with the best of intentions, these tactics tend to diminish rather than enhance communication.
Be quick to listen, slow to speak. Effective listening is a total body experience requiring the use of our eyes, our brain, our feelings, as well as our ears. Pay attention to eye contact, facial expression, tone of voice, and body posture as well as words. Listen for the feelings behind the words and behavior.
Our children are faced with more difficult decisions each year. We want some assurance that our values are the ones that guide them in making those decisions. There’s a much better chance that they have heard the messages and will continue to listen if they believe we are.
