From the President

Hello SCAPA friends!

Cindy BennettWell, it's finally here. The last few weeks of school, can you believe it?
The SCAPA parents have been so wonderful this year with their support- support in so many ways.

Just to sum up what all has been done this school year, let me just give you a BRIEF overview....

The FOAS/Friends has supported 6 productions with not only volunteer time, but money to produce the productions and rent of venues for such large productions. Paid for everything from programs to costumes.
Parents have driven thousands of miles, carpooling, taking equipment, instruments, costumes..... you name it, you've done it.

You've sponsored the 4th Grade Shadow Days that make the new arrivals thrilled to be a part of our school, and sponsored the Back to School Picnic and Silent Auction to get our year started right.

You've given of your time and food to celebrate our wonderful test scores at the C.A.T.S. Reception and Celebration.

You've sent in items to the teacher's when they just didn't have enough Kleenex to keep the H1N1 away!

This list is endless. Thank you.

The list of items that have been purchased by FOAS for the school this year is fabulous!
It starts with the new P.A. system installed in the Multi Purpose Room. The list includes: computers, monitors, Smart Music, stools, video cameras, violin Quartet, Glass workshop in Cincinnati, World maps, Language Arts packets, licensing for numerous academic programs, special dance instruction, storage bins, costume tags, tuners, P.E. equipment, special reading programs, Dance Informance Drama Informance, Piano needs, Baby Grand piano, vocal needs, 4th Grade orientation, Camp Artsmart, Chess Club, Speech Team, Scapacelli, reunion, library, math programs, Art Lease, Artswear, Scholarships, Trivette Award, ...... the list goes on and on and on.

I hope that you know SCAPA could not function without your support. Parents have made a huge difference this year for our kids and our school. We are a team of many who make this crazy ride run. Thank you for enjoying the ride.

Ok, now knowing that.....
Let's keep up the good work! Send in your Box Tops for Education, empty ink cartridges, use your KROGER card, and please use the AMAZON portal located on the main SCAPA web page if you will be ordering anything on line. Don't forget to purchase your SCAPA clothing items any time you can! These small things can help bring in enough revenue so that we can give back to this wonderful school.

May is going to be full of MANY performances, I suggest printing the calendar and dates in this newsletter and keeping it handy so that you don't miss anything!

As always, I hope to see you around school!

From Marilynn Cunningham, Bluegrass Principal

Dear SCAPA Families:

ML CunninghamOur weather has been beautiful and our testing is going well. It is May and that time of the year when we celebrate completing what we started in August. With nine arts areas and their final performances, having an accurate calendar is important. When you look at your calendar, you will see how busy you will be this month. How can we stay connected and grounded during this busy time? Take time each day to live in the moment, reflect over the year, celebrate what you want to remember and forget what is insignificant or unimportant.

We have three days next week and two days the following week and our testing will be complete. In August, we will receive the results of our performance on the Kentucky Core Content. In the meantime, our goal is that all students will perform proficient and distinguished. What offers strength to the staff’s vision is the support our families offer our students. Because of that, if there is anything we can do to help you finish strong, let us know. School and family connections can make the difference between a year ending good or great.

The end of the year is that time when you run to the finish with the hope you get it all done without getting covered up with the minutia, the unimportant. It is that time when you prioritize in order to complete the important things at hand. It is that time when we function one day at a time with a goal of finishing in style. SCAPA is on the way to finishing the year in a strong manner and in style. With that in mind, let’s join hands and lift them high as we approach the finish line—the end of the year.

I appreciate you! I respect you! I celebrate you! Remember that I am always ready to answer your questions or accept your suggestions of how we might change to make a difference for you. Email me marilynn.cunningham@fayette.kyschools.us.

Keep the Arts in our Hearts.
Sincerely,
Marilynn Cunningham, Principal

From Vickie Ritchie, LHS Principal

Dear Friends of the Arts,
Vicki RitchieIt is unbelievable that we are finishing up the school year in a few weeks! Our spring testing went smoothly. SCAPA Sampler was a great variety show. The orchestra concert on the lawn was a picture-perfect evening. Our baseball, softball, tennis and track teams have had gorgeous weather for practices, matches and games.

We have newly elected parent members of SBDM who will begin their terms in July. The newly elected members are Jeff Lawless, Tracy McIntosh, Ken Troske, and Melanie Tyner-Wilson. Thanks to all the parents who participated and voted in the election.

As the weeks fly by, it only seems to get busier. Our AP students take exams beginning May 3. We have awards evenings on May 4 for underclassmen and May 11 for seniors. Senior Inspiration is on May 16 and of course, graduation is on June 4 at 4:00 pm.

The summer reading lists are available on our website and you can order the books at school for delivery by June. All students have at least one selection to read during June and July in order to be prepared for school. Please check with Ms. Guth in the library for more information.

The Merry Month of May is Also Bittersweet

 by Carolyn Waterbury-Tieman

C. W. TiemanMay is bittersweet at SCAPA.  It is the month we welcome our new incoming 4th graders and prepare to bid farewell to our graduating seniors.  I am having great fun getting ready for the 4th grade Shadow Days.  I am looking forward to seeing those bright, smiling faces filled with excited anticipation.  At the same time I find myself reminiscing about my earliest recollections of our seniors.  A few of them I have known since before becoming a part of the SCAPA family.  A number of them were pirates, indians, mermaids or lost children in the first SCAPA production I experienced.  I have watched these young ladies and gentlemen grow and flourish as a result of their participation in the arts.  I will miss watching them on stage, attending their concerts, viewing their art on the walls, and reading their poetry and prose.

Both of these groups are embarking upon an extraordinary time in their lives.  The word that best describes what they are facing this fall is "NEW" - new locations, new schools, new relationships, new rules, new expectations, new opportunities, and so on.  Having had a SCAPA fourth grader this year and a SCAPA graduate a couple of years ago, my experience suggests that while these two groups represent the opposite ends of the SCAPA spectrum, their prospects for the future are not that different.  Therefore, my message of greeting to the incoming 4th grade class of 2010 and parting to the graduating class of 2010, is the same:

Know Yourself.  Be honest with yourself about your strengths and weaknesses.  Work on improving both.

Be Yourself.  It's impossible to be anyone else so don't waste your time trying.

Pick Your Friends Carefully.  A friend is someone who brings out the best in you and wants to see you do your best.  You will be very lucky to find a handful of people who fit this description in your lifetime.  Remember that to have a friend, you have to be a friend.

Treat Others the Way You Want to be Treated.  Be kind, considerate, respectful and easy to get along with.  There really is no good reason for being otherwise.

Make Informed Choices.  When faced with a decision, consider all your options and the likely consequences of each.  Choose wisely.  Accept responsibility for the outcome.

Think Before You Communicate.  Before you open your mouth or press the send button, consider what you are about to say.  Make sure the message you send is the message you intend.

Work Hard.  Nothing worth having or doing comes easy.  The reward of hard work is a job well done and more work.  Find pleasure in whatever it is you must do and it won't seem like work to you.

Always Do Your Best.  Be sure you know what your best is.  Your best will change over time and circumstances.  The only person it is fair to compare yourself to or compete with is your former self.

Stay Connected to Your Family.  These are the people who will be there for you no matter what.  They love you simply because you are you, not because of what you do.

Finally, we all want to be remembered.  There are those who believe this is accomplished by leaving behind grafitti or some visible, tangible sign they were here.  Leave your mark on the stage, the page, the canvas - in short, on the audience, in their minds and on their hearts.  Let the excellence of your work be your autograph.

From the SCAPA Video Files

Ms. Karen Joly would like to give recognition to SCAPA Middle School Video Production students Kurtis Brown, Kara Bethel, Megan Leiter and Coleman Stivers who, along with “guest star” teacher Ashlie Beals, put together a hilarious video about KCCT testing. The students wrote, acted and taped the action, directing Ms. Beals to what would surely be an award-winning performance if a category existed for this genre. In addition, Kurtis presented a finely detailed descriptions about the raw footage that made what is usually a drawn out editing process a snap.

SCAPA Winner in Irish Dance Feis

Hailey Bishop Hailey Bishop, 8th grade Ballet Major at SCAPA Bluegrass, won third place overall out of 18 competitors in her age group at an Irish dance feis/competition in Pittsburg, the first week in April. Under the direction of Allison Asay, a former SCAPA student herself, Hailey represented Kentucky McTeggart Irish Dance Company here in Lexington, where she also serves as Junior Coach. Hailey’s win in Pittsburg places her also in the top half of the Mid-Western Region Irish dance competitions, qualifying her for the Irish Regional Oireachtas (Championships) for 2010. Congratulations Hailey on such well deserved honors!

Winner in Lexington Family Magazine Writing Contest

K Caswell Karlee Caswell, a 5th grade creative writing major, won 1st place for the 4th & 5th grade category in a writing contest sponsored by Lexington Family Magazine. The subject was, "If I could go anywhere….” Congratulations, Karlee!

If I Could Go Anywhere…

If I could go anywhere, I would go back in time to the awesome days I spent with my Nanny at her house. Back to a time of snuggling with Nanny in her brown lift and dump chair, reading books, covered with the pink blanket she crocheted because she didn’t know how to knit. Back to napping in Nanny’s remote control bed wearing sleepy hats and listening to boogie-woogie music. Back to swinging on the back porch, soaking our feet in a pail of water, singing songs and eating ice cream and vanilla wafers. Memories, my tunnels back in time.

KAEA State Visual Art Competition

In the KAEA state visual art competition these SCAPA students won the following awards.

Soprano, Gabrielle Barker, a student at Lafayette High School/School for the Creative and Performing Arts from Lexington, was awarded the Mr. William L. Rouse III "Barbara Rouse Kentucky Prize," a cash prize of $5,000.

The nation’s top young opera singers vied for highly coveted prizes at the 2010 Alltech Vocal Scholarship Competition held earlier this month at the University of Kentucky Singletary Center for the Arts. Nine winners from the popular competition may soon lend their voices to UK Opera Theatre.

The event, which awards a number of opera scholarships and prizes, included seven major prize categories that were awarded to graduate and undergraduate students by Alltech; Bryant’s Rent-All; Kentucky Opera the American Institute of Musical Studies (AIMS) in Graz, Austria; and UK. The competition saw 22 finalists, selected from a pool of more than 300 applicants, vie for the coveted awards. Winners were selected by a panel of five judges not affiliated with UK or Alltech and were announced at the competition’s conclusion.

Alumni News

Alumni! We Want To Know What You Are Doing!

We would like to make plaques to hang outside each of the arts rooms with the names of graduates and what they are doing professionally. Mr. Love has one on the wall just outside his door. Every year he takes his new 4th graders out in the hall, reads the names of past students and what they are doing, and tells the current students that if they dedicate themselves to their work, someday their name will be on the plaque. This is a great motivator! We want every arts teacher to have the opportunity to do the same thing. Please send me your name, year you graduated, major and what you are doing professionally so that we can expand and maintain this tradition. My address is carolyn.tieman@fayette.kyschools.us. We are looking forward to hearing from you and celebrating your success.

Arts Facilitator Seeking Alumni Liaison

The first fourth grade SCAPA class was established at Harrison Elementary School in 1987 which means (if my math is correct) that the first SCAPA class graduated in 1996. Therefore, we have fourteen years worth of SCAPA alumni families. This is an essential group that needs representation. I would like to invite any SCAPA alumni student or parent to serve as our alumni liaison. If you are interested in volunteering in this capacity, please contact me, carolyn.tieman@fayette.kyschools.us, so we can begin exploring how we can better stay connected to and serve this population. This could be one person or a committee, so do not fail to volunteer because you figure someone else already has. I look forward to hearing from you.

SCAPA FUNdraising Opportunities

Box Tops For Education

General Mills Corporation, sponsor of the Box Tops For Education program, has been involved in giving to educational programs since 1996. Over the past 13 years, participating schools have earned over $300 million dollars in funding. The Box Tops program is a simple way for our school to receive money without having to write grants, sell products, work hours, or buy things we don’t want or need. As a parent, relative, or friend of SCAPA, all you have to do is clip the “Official Box Top Coupon” off of the products you already buy and use. A complete list of these products can be found at boxtops4education.com. After clipping, send the box tops to school with your student. Each homeroom teacher has a container in their classroom for collection. Each month, the box tops are collected and counted, with the top collecting homeroom earning a prize. Come on SCAPA Penguins, keep clipping and collecting those box tops. Let’s make this an awesome box tops year.

Volunteer Opportunities

Please download a copy for each of the FCPS approved volunteers in your family. Completed forms may be turned in to Ms. Barbara Talbert at the front office of Bluegrass SCAPA. Thank you so much for your commitment to making SCAPA great!

Please be aware that a records check is required in order to participate in volunteer activities in the Fayette County School system.
