Dear SCAPA Families:
The last two weeks have been times for celebration! Tonight SCAPA will host our fall band concert. Tomorrow night SCAPA will host the Art Lease Coffee House Café. Next week Peter Pan will take flight at the Opera House. Last week-end our 5th graders and our vocal majors sang at the Singletary Center for the Arts. Our dancers performed The Thriller last Friday for our student body.
Every day a new creative writing piece is posted on our web site. Our piano campaign is in full force. We hosted Karl Paulnak, Mark O’Connor and Dan Mason as guest artists. Our academic teachers continue to motivate and inspire our students to learn the core content!
All of this is possible because of your support. Thanks!!!!! In the SCAPA spirit, I want to ask you, how may we help you? What may we do to serve you? How may we recognize you? We are looking for ways to recognize the efforts you make for us and our students every single day. Stay in touch. Together we can.
If you need help as a parent, remember, I am an email (marilynn.cunningham@fayette.kyschools.us) or phone call (859) 381-3332 away. Don’t hesitate to contact me. If we work together, it offers a structure within which your student may accomplish great things.
Dear Friends of the Arts
We have many projects in progress at Lafayette. Our teachers and students are working together to complete the Individual Learning Plan (ILP) requirement (discussed in the September newsletter). Please ask your student to share his or her online entries on the ILP with you. It is a wonderful tool to help students plan for their future educational and career goals. Each parent will receive more information on this in January. Our students are already at 50% completion!
Each junior student at LHS will take the ACT test in March. To prepare for the exam, juniors have recently completed a practice ACT test and will receive feedback on that test. The district has provided an online ACT prep program, TCA Prep, to help students prepare for the March test. Our teachers participated in training designed to help them use the program to help students. Students can access the online study program through our school website. Please watch the website for study sessions offered here at school.
Our stadium and the bus garages on our campus are scheduled for demolition throughout the month of November. The target completion date is August 13, 2010. Our school website will have updates as the stadium project progresses.
We have new hand sanitizer dispensers throughout the building for students and staff (and visitors) to use. Please encourage your students to wash their hands regularly and to use the dispensers whenever possible.
The Homecoming Dance was a huge success! We appreciate the soft drink donations and the time, effort, and energy given by staff and parents who chaperoned. We could not do it without you!
With healthy thoughts,
Vicki Ritchie

Reflecting on Our Distinguished Visiting Artists
During the last few days of October SCAPA had the privilege of hosting two incredible musicians, Mark O’Connor and Karl Paulnack. These gentlemen have both played on stages all over the country, including Carnegie Hall, as well as all over the world. Mr. O’Connor has performed on six of the seven continents, reporting to the students that, “It’s hard to find a gig on Antarctica.” They have played with any number of internationally-renowned musicians and yet they were thrilled to be here with our students. And why is that you ask? You might assume it is because we paid them a hefty honorarium for coming. But you would be wrong, because we did not pay either of them a penny. Perhaps you think they had something to sell and our student population provided an easy target. Wrong again. Neither of them had a merchandise table set up outside the multipurpose room door. According to Dr. Paulnack, “Music is not a commodity. It is a necessity.”
Mr. O’Connor and Dr. Paulnack were anxious to spend time at SCAPA because they know that the future of music, the future of the arts, lies with our children. They are both dedicated to handing down what they have come to know and love about music to the next generation. They have been playing their instruments, violin and piano respectively, since early childhood. They have had the benefit of training from outstanding teachers and mentors. They have studied their instruments inside out and upside down and practiced their art for countless hours. They have collaborated with musicians of a wide range of musical genres. They have made their lives and their living from making music. They want our students to know that it is possible to experience great joy and fulfillment as artists.
Both of them commented on how fortunate we are to have a school like SCAPA. They were impressed with the quality of instruction our students are receiving. They found it very reassuring to find a community of students, teachers, and parents who are passionate about the arts. They reported that we are far more rare than we would guess and regret that there are not more schools like ours. They know the power of the arts to define, enrich, and yes, change lives for the better. In fact, Dr. Paulnack believes that it is the artists, including our children, who will not only change, but save the world.
Prior to her role as SCAPA Arts Facilitator, Carolyn Waterbury-Tieman was a Parent/Family Life Educator and licensed Marriage and Family Therapist. She was the author of The Parents’ Toolbox for The Lexington Family Magazine as well as Pastoral Parenting for the Church of the Resurrection newsletter.

Kentucky Christmas Chorus Event
Dear SCAPA Parents,
We are, once again, planning to have a SCAPA group participate in the Kentucky Christmas Chorus at Rupp Arena on Tuesday, December 15th. This is the Tuesday before Winter Break. We will be assigned a section and would need to be in our seats by 7:00pm. The live telecast of the event begins at 8:00pm.
Our 5th – 8th grade vocal majors will be the featured chorus for this event. They will actually be singing on stage accompanied by the Lexington Philharmonic. I think it would be great for a group of us to be in the audience to show our support as well as participate in the sing-along. This is such an enjoyable family-friendly community-wide celebration of holiday music. I would love to see every grade and arts area represented. We will be proudly displaying our holiday SCAPA banner with the comedy and tragedy masks wearing Santa hats.
There will not be any rehearsals for the sing-along. They will send us a list of the songs ahead of time, but I guarantee you they will all be songs you already know by heart. I hope you will join me and my family for this annual tradition.
If you would like to participate, please email or send me the following information (You will need to provide transportation to and from this event and plan to stay with your child throughout):
- Names of those participating:
- Home address:
- Best phone number:
- Email address:
The deadline for letting me know of your interest is December 10th. Thank you for taking the time to consider this request.

Let’s Dance!
For the past several years we have invited the “Young at Hearts” band to play during lunch for Valentine’s Day. This band plays music from the 30s and 40s. The students always want to dance, but are not familiar with the styles popular during that era. Patti Bingham, Rebecca Stephenson and I would like to change that. We want to start a SCAPA Social Dance Club! This would be open to all SCAPA families, staff and students. We are considering meeting once or twice a month on a weekday evening to learn a different style of dance from jitterbug to the waltz. We are hoping to start in January so that we can be ready to dance with the “Young at Hearts” band on February 11th. If you are interested, please email me at carolyn.tieman@fayette.kyschools.us. Come on SCAPA, let’s dance!
You Are the KEY to Our Success!
In case you haven’t been over to Bluegrass SCAPA lately, you should know there is a large piano keyboard displayed in the lobby. The sign above it reads, “You are the KEY to our success!”, and explains that each of the keys is worth $50.00. The piano department is accepting donations for a baby grand to be housed in the piano room for majors to have access on a daily basis. If you would like to be part of this exciting endeavor, make your checks, in any amount, to Friends of the Arts School and place in the FOAS box in the Bluegrass SCAPA teacher workroom. Thank you so much for your support!
LexJam
Tom Martin asked me to announce that Lex Jam meets on the 2nd Saturday of every month at Natasha’s from 1-4pm. Bring your instrument, including your voice, and join in the fun. They provide a piano (keyboard) and drums. The first hour is reserved for young performers to play, sing or both at an open microphone. If you go, remember to take pictures and tell us about your experience.
October's Box Top Battle
SCAPA Penguins collected 2,491 box tops in October's Box Top Battle. The winning homeroom for the second straight month was Ms. Klein's 5th grade class with 625 box tops collected. Ms. Randolph's 5th grade was in second place collecting 548 box tops. The remaining totals were:
Staff 8, Beers 337, Holmes 307, Sergent 205, Stayton 165, Aldridge 73, Beals 116, Swain 28, and Garr 79. All box tops turned in by Tuesday, November 24 will be counted in the November Battle, with the winning homeroom receiving a pack of Sour Punch Straws for each class member.

Bluegrass 5th Graders, Vocal Majors and Minors to Perform
Attention Parents of 5th Graders, Vocal Majors and Vocal Minors - Please be sure to check out the event dates and times in the Art News - Bluegrass Vocal section of this newsletter for those occasions when your child will be performing. If you have any questions, contact Mrs. Fields, millie.fields@fayette.kyschools.us, 381-3332 or your parent representative, Christy Pellegrino, cpellegrino@insightbb.com, 552-8593.
Attention Lafayette SCAPA Parents
PLEASE share the website below with your juniors and seniors. There is some incredibly helpful information for those who plan to pursue education/training in the performing and visual arts. There are explanations of the difference between a BA and BFA/BM, things to consider when choosing colleges to apply to, the application process, (and it is different for these students since it involves auditions, portfolio reviews, etc.), how to get the most out of a college fair experience, etc. It is definitely a site our students should have access to. The earlier they are thinking about and planning for this, the better. I also have a couple of Performing and Visual Arts College books in my office that parents/students can borrow to look for colleges. Please let me know if I can be of further assistance and thank you for sharing this info with your students.

Annual Central Kentucky Performing and Visual Arts College Fair
What an exciting night at the 2nd Annual Central Kentucky Performing and Visual Arts College Fair! SCAPA alone had 44 students audition: 10 vocals, 7 instrumental, 7 art portfolios, 9 dance and 11 drama/musical theatre. (Last year there were only about 25 total auditions.) The college representatives who conducted auditions were most impressed with the level of talent the students demonstrated. SCAPA made up nearly half of the total number of students who auditioned. We should be extremely proud of how well SCAPA was represented.
This is clearly a valuable experience for our students and we are determined to make it even better next year. If there are college/university programs that you would especially like to see at the PVA College Fair in the future, please send me that information and we will be sure they are added to the invitation list. I want every one of our students to have the opportunity to pursue a career utilizing the talents and skills they have been honing for, in many cases, nine years. Please extend my congratulations and appreciation to your students for their participation.

Author Sandra Krajewski
The creative writing majors were very honored to have Sandra Krajewski, the author of the book Naomi’s Journey, come visit us. Sandra talked about her other books that she had published and why she wrote them. Sandra asked us if there was one thing that we could change in the world what would it be? Some of the answers shocked Sandra a lot. Some of them were abortion, war, child abuse, and animal abuse. Sandra said, “Wow! I am almost scared to hear the rest of your answers!” All of us were really surprised with what she said. She said that we would be great authors when we grow up, and she almost fainted when some of us said that we published our poems and stories. We are again very pleasured to have Sandra come. Thanks Sandra Krajewski! (Katrin Flores, 4th grade).

On, the 14th of October in the creative writing room, dreams were born as Sandra sat and listened to the chiming voices and the ominous dreams of these 4th and 5th graders that all came together and listened to this harmonious writer!! (Nathan Pennington, 4th grade)
When I first heard Sandra Krajewski was coming, I was so excited. I love when authors come to school, and she came just to the creative writing classes! When she talked about what she wrote, (Naomi’s Journey) I was amazed how she thought her whole life, “I’m going to be a teacher when I grow up.” And she was. But she is also an author. Her story is amazing. Just the fact that she has a desire to be writing stuff like that is amazing. When she came, I loved it. I hope that she will be able to inspire all of us and many more in the future. (Clara Woods, 5th grade)
LexArts Announces First Ever Youth Arts Council
LexArts created an advisory committee early in 2009 to begin working toward creating a Youth Arts Council for Lexington. The committee met over several months to determine the vision and working mission for this new council. The application process was created and information was sent to every high school, both private and public, in Fayette County soliciting applicants. Lafayette High School, SCAPA in particular, submitted the largest number of applications. The students selected for the first Lexington Youth Arts Council were announced at a news conference at Arts Place on October 2, 2009. We are proud to have eight SCAPA students representing Lafayette. They are: Alexandra Dantchenko, Elliott Mattox, Sydney Steele, Blake Sugarman, Ellie Todd, Wood Van Meter, Adela Wilson and Jacob Yates. For more about this exciting opportunity visit http://www.fcps.net/news/press-releases/2009-10/youth-arts-council

The group included Emma Mathews, Andreana Brenner, Meredith Hinkle, Joseph Waterbury-Tieman, Walker Cody, Savannah Wilson, Presley Gookin, Petya Karkelanova, Camille Gorena, Deasha Thompson, Erin Logsdon and Lucy Sims. Thanks to all of these young artists for taking a chance!

Boonesborough
On Thursday, October 1st the 4th graders, with their teachers Mrs. Holmes, Mr. Beers and Mrs. Sergent and a group of parents, traveled to Boonesborough to visit the fort and conduct scientific experiments near the Kentucky River. The weather cooperated beautifully and everyone had an informative and enjoyable experience. What a lucky group of students to have teachers and parents willing to take them on this journey into Kentucky history.

Hugh O’Brien Youth Leadership Program (HOBY)
The Hugh O’Brien Youth Leadership Program (HOBY) was founded in 1958 by veteran actor Hugh O’Brian. The mission of HOBY is to provide lifelong leadership development opportunities that empower individuals to achieve their highest potential. O’Brian set out to help young people make a difference and become positive catalysts for change—in the home, school, workplace, and community. Each year a SCAPA Lafayette Sophomore student is selected by the SCAPA Lafayette staff as our Ambassador to this wonderful program. This year’s HOBY Ambassador is Ema Horvath. Ema will be attending the Kentucky HOBY seminar June 3 – 6, 2010 at Transylvania University. According to the HOBY website, Ema will have the chance to discover and sharpen leadership skills; come face-to-face with current leaders in such fields as government, media, business and education; and will be taught how to think, not what to think, empowering herself to value her own opinions and ideas, and to find the courage to express those opinions among her peers. Then, HOBY will challenge her to take her experience back to Lafayette HS and Lexington and make a difference for others.
Congratulations Ema!!!

Alumni! We Want To Know What You Are Doing!
We would like to make plaques to hang outside each of the arts rooms with the names of graduates and what they are doing professionally. Mr. Love has one on the wall just outside his door. Every year he takes his new 4th graders out in the hall, reads the names of past students and what they are doing, and tells the current students that if they dedicate themselves to their work, someday their name will be on the plaque. This is a great motivator! We want every arts teacher to have the opportunity to do the same thing. Please send me your name, year you graduated, major and what you are doing professionally so that we can expand and maintain this tradition. My address is carolyn.tieman@fayette.kyschools.us. We are looking forward to hearing from you and celebrating your success.
Arts Facilitator Seeking Alumni Liaison
The first fourth grade SCAPA class was established at Harrison Elementary School in 1987 which means (if my math is correct) that the first SCAPA class graduated in 1996. Therefore, we have fourteen years worth of SCAPA alumni families. This is an essential group that needs representation. I would like to invite any SCAPA alumni student or parent to serve as our alumni liaison. If you are interested in volunteering in this capacity, please contact me, carolyn.tieman@fayette.kyschools.us, so we can begin exploring how we can better stay connected to and serve this population. This could be one person or a committee, so do not fail to volunteer because you figure someone else already has. I look forward to hearing from you.

Box Tops For Education
General Mills Corporation, sponsor of the Box Tops For Education program, has been involved in giving to educational programs since 1996. Over the past 13 years, participating schools have earned over $300 million dollars in funding.
The Box Tops program is a simple way for our school to receive money without having to write grants, sell products, work hours, or buy things we don’t want or need. As a parent, relative, or friend of SCAPA, all you have to do is clip the “Official Box Top Coupon” off of the products you already buy and use. A complete list of these products can be found at boxtops4education.com. After clipping, send the box tops to school with your student. Each homeroom teacher has a container in their classroom for collection. Each month, the box tops are collected and counted, with the top collecting homeroom earning a prize. Come on SCAPA Penguins, keep clipping and collecting those box tops. Let’s make this an awesome box tops year.
SCAPA FOAS and Amazon Fundraiser
A great way to support F.O.A.S. without having to buy or sell anything! Come join us at Amazon to help wrap some holiday gift orders.
Program dates:
- Monday, Nov. 23 through Wed. Dec. 23 (No gift wrapping shifts on Thanksgiving Eve or Thanksgiving Day). Held at 1850 Mercer Road off Leestown Rd.
Shifts times:
- Morning 8-12 or 9:30-1:30
- Afternoon 2-6
- Evenings 7-11 or 10-2 (a.m.)
Volunteer for this fundraiser by emailing me with the date and shift you'd like to work. Please also include a reliable phone number. Anyone 18 or older can volunteer to help FOAS. We've had grandmothers, sisters, brothers and friends lend a hand. Every wrapper helps!
We need to submit our shift request quickly! Pre-registration is required for all gift wrapping volunteers for EVERY shift. Groups are scheduled for shifts on a first-come/first-serve basis and fill up quickly. There are 25-30 volunteer spots available per shift.
I will develop a master list of volunteers and send it out to as we go. You may work as many shifts as you like. I would like to submit our first shift request by Monday the 28th. Please look at your calendar and email me. It is important to remember once you commit to a shift Amazon will expect you there since others are declined the opportunity once the shift fills.
There will be a training class/meeting scheduled for all volunteers given by Amazon after we have submitted our requests. (Date TBD)
Please feel free to email me with any questions or concerns about this fundraiser. This is a GREAT and EASY opportunity, and in this economic climate we need to support programs that don't affect our family budgets but still allow us to support our great school. This is an easy way to help!
Thanks,
