From Beth Randolph, Bluegrass PrincipalDear SCAPA Family, Congratulations are in order for several of our vocal music students both at SCAPA, Bluegrass and SCAPA, Lafayette. These students auditioned and were selected for the prestigious American Choral Directors’ Association Southern Division Choral Festival: Ella Barton, Holly Bennett, Herman Bratcher, Kurtis Brown, Brennan Burke, Hunter England, Hannah Hetzel-Ebben, Jason Jackson, Dayup Kim, Adrienne Omelchenko, and Quentin Prewitt. This honor choir will be held in Winston-Salem, North Carolina on February 29th through March 3, 2012. Kudos to all of you for your singing excellence! Reading through our calendar of events is exciting, not only because of the wonderful performances we will see and hear, but also because artistic involvement has so many academic benefits. A study by James S. Catterall, Richard Chapleau, and John Iwanaga at the University of California at Los Angeles found that students who participate in the arts for at least three hours on three days each week for at least one year are:
If these statistics don’t make you want to run out and begin studying some form of art, perhaps one these last points will. Students of the arts read for pleasure nearly twice as often and perform community service more than four times as often as students who do not participate in artistic endeavors. These facts bring out the obvious. An arts enriched education (Source: artsusa.org) pays big dividends in student achievement. Our school is privileged to have rich artistic opportunities available. The curriculum and discipline the students learn at SCAPA has once again propelled them to an elite position in our statewide testing. SCAPA elementary students ranked as the ninth highest scoring school on the Kentucky Core Content Tests (KCCT) and our middle school students sit once again at the pinnacle. Huge accolades go to the SCAPA students, teachers, parents, and leadership provided by the Fayette County Public Schools. Keep up the magnificent work, Penguins! Sincerely,
From Vicki Ritchie, LHS PrincipalDear Friends of the Arts,
We have started our Saturday practice sessions using the TCA Prep program. This free, online program prepares students for the ACT. Last year, many of our students made good progress using this resource. Please see our website under the TCA link for more information about scheduling. This year’s ACT for juniors will be March 6, 2012. We would like to thank the parents who have committed to helping with our committee work for this year. The number of parent members on our committees increased 159% from last fall. These parents are working with our staff to plan recognition and career programs, review school policies and progress reports, make budgetary and curriculum recommendations, and complete many other important tasks. We appreciate your time and efforts! Vicki Ritchie by Carolyn Waterbury-Tieman |

Calling all teenage movie directors and music composers – it’s time for the Keep It Real – Don’t Drink video contest. Since the start of the Keep It Real campaign in 2003, underage drinking in Kentucky has decreased. Meanwhile, the campaign’s video competition has increased in popularity.
The first competition saw 30 videos, and that number has more than doubled. Area high school students can submit their 30-second video commercials about the dangers of underage drinking until December 12 at 5pm.
Online voting for the submissions will begin on January 12, and awards, including cash prizes, will be given out at the Kentucky Theater in February when two iPads will be given away as door prizes. You must be present to win.
The winning submissions will run on TV and during pre-show ads in local cinemas. Donna Bernier, a Certified Prevention Professional and Keep It Real committee member, says abstaining from alcohol is important for every teen’s future. “Teens need to know that their choices are broader and bigger when they choose not to drink,” she said. People who use alcohol before the age of 15 are five times more likely to abuse alcohol that those who wait until age 21.
For more details or to access a teacher’s instructional package, visit www.keep-it-real.us.
Tickets are now on sale for this year's Scapa events at the Opera House.
Parents of 8th grade students: In December Mrs. Erbe will send home to you with your child a letter of explanation about the high school course selection process that takes place in January.
The SCAPA MathCounts Team has begun holding practices on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons.
The fall schedule is as follows:
The fall matches are “Quiz Bowl” style where speed counts and the fastest students buzz in first. Throughout the fall we will also practice MathCounts style questions which are paper and pencil problem solving tests done both individually and as a team. The official MathCounts competitions will be held in February and March. Good luck to the SCAPA MathCounts team!
Let me know if you need any further information.
Thanks, Devin Onkst
You are invited to make a big difference at Lafayette High School by joining one of the school's committees. While the Site-Based Decision-Making Council approves policies and procedures, it is the committees that actually put them together. These committees will be meeting soon to set meeting dates and times and to officially establish which people are on the committees and, thus, have voting privileges. It is imperative that we get more parents and students on these committees that do the work that is presented to the SBDM for approval. Budget (for band, choir, orchestra, art, academics, etc.), discipline, curriculum choices, and policies about everything from field trips to testing are too important not to have parents' input. SBDM are SCAPA parents Tracy Schultz McIntosh, Chris Aldridge, and Molly Toney and Dave Ewen.
Please help make sure that your opinions about our school and its programs are heard. We NEED YOU! Thanks! - Tracy McIntosh
As a SCAPA Parent, you are automatically a member of the Friends of the Arts School (FOAS). We meet each month and our work is vital to SCAPA. We need everyone of you to become and active member of FOAS! You can start by attending the following meetings at 6:30pm in Room 146:
If you want to be in the know and have a say, this is the place to be.
During majors on October 3rd and 5th the ballet and contemporary dancers were visited by Jeromy and Lyndy Franklin Smith. Both of these former Broadway performers have multiple credits to their name. Lyndy was in the original cast of “The Little Mermaid” and was dance captain and swing for “A Chorus Line.” Jeromy was in the cast of “42nd Street” and “Swing” among others. They spent time with the elementary, middle and high school dancers teaching musical theatre steps to music from “The Little Mermaid,” “Shrek,” “A Chorus Line,” and “The Producers.” Thank you to the dance faculty for making this incredible experience possible for our students.

All Bluegrass SCAPA students were invited to create a pumpkin that represented their favorite book character for an exhibit sponsored by Mrs. Sarantakos in the library. The following students participated and the five prize winners received a gift certificate to SCAPA’s Book Fair which will be held next month. The pumpkins were on display in the library the last two weeks of October until Halloween. What terrific creations!
The participants were:

Recently, during one of my trips through the hallways at BG SCAPA, I was struck by the numerous creative assignments gracing our walls. It reminded me that not all parents have a chance to walk these hallways and admire our students’ work, so I thought it might help to add a section to the newsletter where these are showcased. Not only is the work impressive, but the creative nature of the assignments our teachers design for our students is inspiring. We are so fortunate to be a part of the SCAPA learning community! - Carolyn W-T |
Mrs. Graham-Greene used this activity with the students while Mr. Onkst was on the 8th grade field trip. This activity was an extention activity in the study of integers. Prior to this activity, students had practiced using number lines to gain experience about positive and negative integers. They extended their knowledge by accurately identifying ordered pairs of positive or negative integers on both the x and y axis of a coordinate grid within the appropriate quadrant. The quilt project then required students to connect a specific sequence of ordered pairs together to form patterns on the coordinate grid. Finally, each student was given specific instructions about which shapes on the coordinate grid to color, so that the unique pattern of each quilt would reveal itself. Each student had a different set of directions for connecting their ordered pairs, which resulted in the variety of quilt patterns seen in our display; however each student demonstrated their creativity in determining which colors they chose to complete their quilt. As a fun followup to this activity, the students paired up with a partner to play “Battleship,” which also reinforced identifying points (ordered pairs) on a coordinate grid, in order to sink their opponent’s ship.

Ms. Beals 6th graders concluded their unit of study of Ecology by creating “Endangered Species Fact Sheets.” They were able to apply many of the concepts they studied in class when designing their fact sheets.

Students in Mr. Spaeth’s 8th grade social studies class were given the task of designing a state license plate that reflected the colonial history of one of the original thirteen colonies. The students worked in partners and on the license plate had to include an image and slogan to accompany the state name. Some students even created a “vanity plate” style license number that went along with their theme. Slogans included “New York: We’ve Been Duked” reflecting the naming of the colony after the Duke of York, and “Connecticut: With the Help of a Tree, We are Now Free” reflecting Connecticut’s Charter Oak, a symbol of independence from English rule.

This section is reserved for recognizing accomplishments by SCAPA students, parents, faculty and staff. Please send arts accomplishments to Carolyn Waterbury-Tieman (carolyn.tieman@fayette.kyschools.us). Space limitations will determine how many we can include in any given month.

SCAPA Introductions
Rebekah Reeves is originally from the town of Vanceburg, Kentucky, which is in the northeast corner of the state. She currently holds a Bachelor’s of Arts in English from the University of Louisville and Masters of Education in teaching English from The Ohio State University. She is currently serving SCAPA as Literacy Coach and this is her tenth year as an educator. In her first five years, she taught high school English in Columbus, Ohio. In 2007, she moved to Lexington and spent three and a half years at Lexington Traditional Magnet Middle School teaching seventh grade Language Arts. She feels right at home and overjoyed to be a part of SCAPA’s staff. She has one daughter named Ruby and lives with her partner, David Wachter. Her educational goal is to assist all students in achieving to their maximum potential.
Currently the 8th graders are learning about energy resources and environmental issues in science class. These pictures show the students using our new Vernier LabQuests during an experiment about global warming.

“Viking Erik the Red sailed into SCAPA on Oct. 18th to discuss with all 5th graders his exploits, his son, Leif Eriksson (Erik’s son – get it?), and to model the criteria that Mr. Lindsey’s class will use when researching their own explorer. Real Norwegian was spoken, a horned helmet was worn, and reports of a knarr seen rowing down Lafayette Parkway were made to the police.”

Congratulations to the following students who participated in an all-day rehearsal on Friday, November 4th at the EKU campus and then performed in the 2011 District 7, Elementary CKMEA concert at Brock Auditorium: Megan Clendening, Abigail Cunningham, Aubrey Dawson, Valerie Langdorf, Kendall McCormick, Jacqueline Mullins, Luke Pellegrino, Ella Phillips, Ashley Prigge, Thomas Ward III, and Ava Cullen. Thank you for sharing your voices and making this a memorable vocal event!
Scapa 11: Recently students completed creating two painted silk scarf designs; it was really great to see the students take on the challenge of using very interesting subject mattter (from jelly fish floating in a sea of blues to elephants swirling in galaxies from outer space). I hope to submit some of these designs in the mid-year EKU Bluegrass Region art show. Students are currently working with the world of glass; they have selected a specific size and subject to create in a window format. It has been interesting to see how they have challenged themselves with the use of more than the 'normal' amount of shapes/pieces witin the window designs. We will also be creating images with the mosaic glass method ....one that does not involve traditional soldering. The students are taking a brief 'break in the midst of the glass unit to create a surrealistic image using either intense colored pencil work, a untraditional water based oil pastel, or a combination of those methods. Students have been reporting an incidence of 'increased dream activity' after the introduction of the lesson so parents beware!

The SCAPA MathCounts team held their first match against Southern. Both the JV and Varsity teams did extremely well, each winning their match. The scores were:

Varsity: SCAPA 17, Southern 1 (Team members were Lane Aldridge, Riley Bishop, Gavin Burt, Azure Rowe, Stephanie Stumbur, Aaron Choate, Krista Manche, Josephine Wendroth)
Thanks to Ms. Randolph and the staff members that stopped in to watch the students in action. I know the kids really appreciated you taking the time to be there. Our other home match this season will be on December 8th, against St. Peter and Paul.
Three SCAPA alumni were involved with the recent production of “Romeo et Juliette” by the UK Opera Theatre. Gabrielle Barker, ’10 voice major, was in the chorus and in the pit were Alexandra Freeman, ’08 strings major, on cello and Sarah Grindle, ’11 strings major, on viola.

Stafford Hartman, ’05 vocal major, was recently shot and robbed in Memphis, TN where she currently resides. She was returning home after a rehearsal of the opera “Tosca” at the Orpheum. Stafford went on to perform the next night in a wheelchair, a testament to the artist spirit. See more about this story and the response of the Memphis community to her “playing injured” and giving her all even in a minor role so that paying customers experienced what they came to see and hear. All of our best wishes for her speedy recovery, Stafford. We are so proud of you! |
We would like to make plaques to hang outside each of the arts rooms with the names of graduates and what they are doing professionally. Mr. Love has one on the wall just outside his door. Every year he takes his new 4th graders out in the hall, reads the names of past students and what they are doing, and tells the current students that if they dedicate themselves to their work, someday their name will be on the plaque. This is a great motivator! We want every arts teacher to have the opportunity to do the same thing. Please send me your name, year you graduated, major and what you are doing professionally so that we can expand and maintain this tradition. My address is carolyn.tieman@fayette.kyschools.us. We are looking forward to hearing from you and celebrating your success.

SCAPA FUNdraising Opportunities
There are 3 ways that you can financially support SCAPA all year long with minimal effort!
Remember that when you contribute to SCAPA it benefits every student, grades 4-12, in every arts area. You can make a difference!
General Mills Corporation, sponsor of the Box Tops For Education program, has been involved in giving to educational programs since 1996. Over the past 13 years, participating schools have earned over $300 million dollars in funding. The Box Tops program is a simple way for our school to receive money without having to write grants, sell products, work hours, or buy things we don’t want or need. As a parent, relative, or friend of SCAPA, all you have to do is clip the “Official Box Top Coupon” off of the products you already buy and use. A complete list of these products can be found at boxtops4education.com. After clipping, send the box tops to school with your student. Each homeroom teacher has a container in their classroom for collection. Each month, the box tops are collected and counted, with the top collecting homeroom earning a prize. Come on SCAPA Penguins, keep clipping and collecting those box tops. Let’s make this an awesome box tops year.
Please download a copy for each of the FCPS approved volunteers in your family. Completed forms may be turned in to Ms. Barbara Talbert at the front office of Bluegrass SCAPA. Thank you so much for your commitment to making SCAPA great!
Please be aware that a records check is required in order to participate in volunteer activities in the Fayette County School system.
