From the President

Dear Families and Friends of SCAPA,

Kathy Warnecke RyanWow, are we busy at SCAPA! Besides all of the activities that we have organizationally launched in September for this school year, like Twelve Angry Men/Women, Willy Wonka, Jr., DestinationImagination, Chess Club, MathCounts, and Speech Team, we are rolling along on all fundraising, SBDM, and audition activities. We have many awesome parent leaders who are managing and assisting with all of these functions, and making my life as President very bearable (THANK YOU!!!), but we need more! In particular, we have an extraordinary number of Bluegrass students participating in Willy Wonka, Jr. and will need many parents to volunteer lots of time to monitor the after-school rehearsals so please try to help out!

As you know, Innisbrook has been “wrapped” up. But thanks to Mr. Bob Price, we have launched the Coffee and Tea middle school fundraiser and Jennifer Gorena will be asking you to wrap packages for Amazon.com beginning in November and running up through a few days before December 25th. With the souring economy, we need more effort than usual to keep all SCAPA adventures and activities humming along at the level we have come to be proud that we have achieved! So I hope that you will embrace this new opportunity with Amazon. The more hours/packages we wrap, the more money we earn for FOAS. This is an “adults only” project and any adult (like extended family members or FOAS adult Alumni that want to help FOAS) can participate – no wrapping talent is required. I also hear from Jennifer that this can be lots of fun if you get a group of your friends to wrap with you and it can be done at virtually any time of day/night! Thanks so much to Jennifer for volunteering to coordinate this effort – let’s give her lots of scheduling to do!

Letter from Marilynn Cunningham

Dear SCAPA Families:

ML CunninghamIt is October and very soon, October 15, 2008, to be exact, we will have our first traditional celebration of students who earned all A’s and B’s. SCAPA calls it “abs”. In the back of my mind, I would like to have a parent awards ceremony. According to the research, one of the reasons students earn good grades is a positive relationship exists between the school and the students’ families. The research seems to indicate that when a family provides support, insistence and expectations to the child, the presence or absence of a family in the physical school building is immaterial.

With that in mind, how can you connect with the school without being present in the school? The main tool to use is the student’s agenda or planner. Hopefully you will plan for a regular time to go over the planner together every day. To directly communicate with the teacher, write in the agenda. Another way to communicate is through email and teacher’s web page. The assignments or course outlines are listed on their web pages. Another document to check is the course syllabus. Our teachers are masters at planning their classes and their plans may be easily followed through reviewing the unit summaries. Assignments may be viewed with Infinite Campus Parent Portal. If you do not have a password, email parent.portal@fayette.kyschools.ky.us to get your password. Never hesitate to contact our staff about any concerns or questions you might have. Listen to your student, but remember they are not the adults in the home/school environments. We can offer students support by connecting with each other-adult to adult.

Another important supportive role you play is to do everything in your power to plan for your student’s health. Being at school is essential. Our teachers plan their lessons to be interactive and to promote a depth of understanding on the topic. If your student must be miss school, send a note and check to see if it arrives in our attendance clerk’s office. Ms. Talbert, 381-3332, monitors the daily attendance and often she does not receive the notes from you.

Lastly, come to our monthly school/home conversations. Our next meeting will be at 5:30 on October 21, 2008. We held our first meeting/conversation in September and twenty-two people came. Ms. Waterbury-Tieman spoke about the “Art of Parenting” and we all contributed afterwards. It lasted for an hour in Helm Hall. I learned something and had fun, too.

It is a joy to be at SCAPA. It is a joy supporting an enriching environment for your students. I am looking forward to seeing you when you can come to the school, but if you are not able to come to the school, I am looking forward to watching your child succeed with your support at home. Thanks for supporting your SCAPA student.

Letter from Vicki Ritchie

Dear Friends of the Arts,

Vicki RitchieLafayette had a wonderful Open House on September 18. Thank you to all of the parents and families who came to visit on that evening. As I have observed classrooms over the past few weeks, I have seen students reciting poems, singing and dancing, working in groups to solve math problems and debating social issues. They are working hard and their efforts will be reported in their upcoming mid-term progress reports.

Mid-terms will be mailed the first week of October. If you do not receive the mid-term by October 6, please contact us at Lafayette.

Sincerely,

Vicki Ritchie

Announcements and Reminders

Battle of the Books

Battle of the Books is a reading competition sponsored by Fayette County Public Schools. Students in the third through fifth grades read the books on the list and compete to be on their schools' Battle of the Books team. In the spring, a written test is given to determine which students are selected for the team. Competitions between schools follow the written test. At these events, the students sit at buzzers and ring in to answer questions. The school competitions soon narrow the list of participating schools to four teams from across the county who move on to compete in the semi-final and final round of competition. Last year,

SCAPA's Battle of the Books Team came in third place, losing to the eventual winner, Cassidy Elementary School, by one question in the semi-final round of competition. SCAPA's lunchtime book club meets to discuss all the books on the Battle of the Books' list. Any student in the fourth or fifth grade who has read the book or has an interest in the book to be discussed is welcome to attend. The book club meets in Ms. Randolph's classroom from 11:26 - 11:51 on the designated dates. Hope to see you at book club!

Faculty Performances

Paul Thomas will be appearing in Lillian Hellman's "The Little Foxes" in early November at the Bodley-Bullock House on the corner of Mill and 2nd Street. November 2nd and 9th at 2:00pm and November 3rd, 4th, 5th 7th and 8th at 7:00pm. The show is being produced by his lovely wife, Lisa Thomas. For tickets call 252-8014, ext. 36.

Alumni from the graduating class of 1998 will provide a showcase performance! There will be food, music and dancing, but mostly there will be fun and fellowship with our SCAPA family, past and present. Don't miss it!

If you are a member of the 1998 SCAPA class, please contact Matt Krebs, vmkrebs@gmail.com, (859) 221-5243. If you would like to be involved with planning the reunion, donating food, or simply to learn more, please contact Carolyn Waterbury-Tieman, carolyn.tieman@fayette.kyschools.us, (859) 536-1313.

A Note from Ms. Lab

As many of you know, we have made a gigantic leap in organizing our SCAPA costume inventory this summer. They look wonderful. Thanks to Laura Justice Slone and her many helpers, the costumes are now either hung on hangers and racks or packed in specific, marked boxes in Helm Hall. We have found a permanent home for the costumes but first must sew labels on the back of each costume piece. These labels will help costumers of future productions in fitting our student actors. This will greatly simplify costuming, which has been a HUGE undertaking in the past.

Labeling each costume piece is a big job and we will need many, many hands to complete it. JoAnne Sykes has generously volunteered to oversee the labeling project. With the assistance of the Sterling Company, she has ordered and designed our SCAPA/FOAS labels. There are now "label packets" with instructions and materials available for anyone who can help. Please contact JoAnne at 223-4892 or JAS9100@aol.com to pick up a set of costumes and label packets. I cannot overemphasize the enormity of this project and appreciate your willingness to contribute. In time, and with your help, we will have an organized, accessible costume inventory.

So, I'm taking you up on the help that many of you have offered. Please contact JoAnne and help us get the labeling completed.

I appreciate your continued support,
Bert (Miss Lab)

Lost and Found

Lost and Found at Bluegrass SCAPA is overflowing! The current protocol is to leave whatever is in there alone for one month. On the last Monday of each month everything is put out on tables in the MPR during lunch. Whatever is not claimed at that time is then donated to needy groups. PLEASE remind your students to check Lost and Found regularly if they have a habit of misplacing things, especially lunch boxes/bags as they become truly disgusting. Parents, you are welcome to come look for yourself as well.

God's Pantry Needs Your Help

Please help SCAPA and Ms. Stayton help GOD'S PANTRY!

Let's see if we can get every student to send in at least 1 food item this week!

MS. STAYTON WILL PERSONALLY TAKE THE ITEM FROM YOU IN THE AFTER SCHOOL CAR LINE! Just hand it out your car window! You don't even have to come into the school! If you are picking up a child late after school, the barrels are inside the front door!

SCAPA HAS ONLY FILLED 2 BARRELS!! (usually fill at least 6)

PLEASE SEND IN ANY ITEMS THAT YOU CAN! You may send any item at any time, it doesn't have to be a certain week!

Not only can SCAPA students feel good about helping others, but the school can win money to be used by all students!

Whole Foods Artistic Activities

Whole Foods in The Mall at Lexington Green is sponsoring several artistic activities this month including the Create a Scarecrow, Edible Sculpture Contest, and the Pumpkin and Gourd Carving and Painting Contest. Great activities for our artistic SCAPA families!

Fundraiser with Amazon

Come join us at Amazon to help wrap some holiday gift orders. You don’t have to be an expert, or even experienced!

Amazon provides pre-cut paper, electric tape dispensers, an organized table, and cushy mats to stand on. The shifts are only 4 hours long and the time goes by quickly. Training will be provided, so don’t worry about your ‘wrapping abilities’.

This is a festive and fun way to help the Friends community stay strong. Amazon will donate .60 to .75 cents per package for helping them wrap their holiday orders. The average is 22 packages/hour, but many wrapped closer to 40 – 50 packages/hour. What a great way to support F.O.A.S. without having to write a check or sell anything. If you like that idea, then support this fundraiser.

Gather a group of friends, make it a family event, invite other parents in your major or grade, or come join me (I’ll be out there most Thursdays!) and help the Friends. The shifts are:

  • 8:30 am – 12:30 pm
  • 2 pm – 6 pm
  • 7pm – 11pm
  • 7 days/week November 24th – December 23rd (excluding the 7-11 shift on 11/26)

We can work as many shifts as we like, but shifts are first come, first serve based on need. It gets really busy closer to the 23rd. So please let me know if you’d like to help out. Contact me with your:

  • Name
  • Reliable phone number
  • Reliable email
  • Shift times AND dates

I will confirm your scheduled time slot prior to your shift.

Please feel free to email me with any questions you may have. I have had a lot of fun doing this fundraiser for 2 years now and will be happy to tell you about it.

Amazon is located off Leestown Rd. just past hwy. 4. Closed shoes, i.e., tennis shoes are required, **this is a standing job. Wrappers must be at least 18. Nothing can be carried on the Amazon floor, so purses/backpacks/cell phones are left in secure lockers during your shift. You may bring a clear bottle of water.

Please email me at gorenas@insightbb.com OR leave a note in the Friends mailbox Attn: Jennifer Gorena OR call me: 552-6434

Friends of the Arts School (FOAS) Meetings

The next Friends of the Arts School (FOAS) meeting will take place on Tuesday, August 19, at 6:30pm in the Bluegrass SCAPA library.

Mark you calendars for the remaining meeting dates in 2008-09:

Sponsorship

SCAPA needs you! The time has come for parents and friends to consider advertising in the programs for all of the 2008-2009 productions. You may do so by completing the benefactors, patrons, supporter form which allows you to place your name, or the name of other family members such as grandparents, under the appropriate category in our production programs. If you own a business, perhaps you would like to purchase a business card ad where an exact copy of your card in black and white will appear in the programs. All names and business card ads purchased will appear in the programs for all five productions for the 2008-09 school year: Willy Wonka Jr., Twelve Angry Men/Twelve Angry Women, Dance SCAPA, Mill Girls, and Fiddler on the Roof. You may complete the form(s)) and mail them along with your check to FOAS, PO Box 866, Lexington, Ky. 40588. All support is needed and is greatly appreciated.

If you know of someone who owns a business and who might be interested in becoming a sponsor for the 2008-09 production season, sponsorships are available ranging from $500 to $5000. or above. The sponsors of our productions make it possible for our audience members to enjoy our wonderful shows. Sponsors will receive ads in all programs as well as signage at the event venue.

If you know of a potential sponsor or if you would like to serve on the sponsorship committee, please contact the VP of Development, Tracy Lovan at 859-948-1955.

Harry Pickens Visits SCAPA

On September 10th, Bluegrass SCAPA was treated to a performance by Harry Pickens, an internationally known pianist, composer, teacher and arts advocate who resides in Louisville, Kentucky. Mr. Pickens spent 7th period sharing his talents, stories, wisdom and passion for the arts with our 4th-8th graders. Within 10 minutes of entering our building he said, "I want to come back." Mr. Pickens wants to adopt SCAPA. He is making plans to return and spend an entire day meeting with all of our students from both Bluegrass and Lafayette SCAPA as well as parents. Stay tuned for details of his next visit.

Art

Don’t bring your crows to Lexington Green this October! They’ll be scared away by all the scarecrows that’ll be around! Lexington Green is holding a scarecrow contest, and Art majors are busy constructing entries. The elementary majors and middle school majors will each enter one life-size scarecrow, and you’ll be able to see AND VOTE FOR THEM after October 16th at Lexington Green. Winners will be announced Sunday, October 26th during Scarecrow Fest.

Dance

Middle school majors should have assignment sheets detailing weekly assignments for nine weeks. This is also where they place their goals. Please make sure your students are keeping up with these. Ballet majors and minors also are working on memorizing the technical aspects of a set warm-up. It takes a long time for the body to “memorize” the proper movements for a good warm-up. Please encourage your kids to work on this at home as well.

Band

Nothing submitted for this month.

Creative Writing

Because of openings from students leaving, creating spaces for others to come to our school, Creative Writing has the largest group of elementary majors ever! It’s a great group and they are busy writing and sharing stories! Currently, Creative Writing majors are learning about science fiction. They are watching Jules Verne movies, and reading about Ray Bradbury, among others. The “performance” of a creative writing student is writing, so please check out the creative writing website and read some of the great work they put up every day! New material is added, categorized by student, throughout the year!

Orchestra

Our combined Middle School concert and “Playathon” is on for October 30. This event is for the whole family, so plan to come and have a fun, musical evening. Solo & Ensemble fees are due by October 3. A form was sent home, as well as given out at Open House. The Tri-State Honors String Orchestra Clinic will be held at Morehead State University on Saturday, November 15. The day-long event will feature violinist Rachel Barton Pine and two conductors from Indiana University. Enjoy Chinese Music and Chinese food at Panda Garden, 2358 Nicholasville Road, Sunday October 12, shows at 7:00 and 8:00. Featuring Mrs. Campbell on erhu (2 string fiddle).

Vocal

Vocal music majors have had a busy school year so far! Fifth and sixth grade majors gave two concerts in one night on September 4th! They presented a historical concert (complete with period costumes), singing the music of Stephen Collins Foster. The concerts were at Cardinal Hill Hospital and The Lafayette Assisted Living. Majors will again give this concert at the Junior League’s Holly Day Market, November 16th at the Horse Park. Tickets are available for the general public, so come out and support our kids! Call the Junior League at 252-8014 for ticket information. Also, Mrs. Fields will be the official accompanist for the CKMEA on Friday, September 26th.

Drama

It’s a sweet time in the Drama department this fall as the kids get set to put up the fun family musical: Willy Wonka, Jr.! Please mark your calendars for this great show, which plays at the Opera House Nov 6-8. There will be a mandatory costume parade (to check costumes) Satuday, October 11th in the Multi Purpose Room. Fourth graders from 10-12 and fifth graders from 12-2. Elementary kids will rehearse at the Opera house, during school, November 4th. (4th grade 8:30am-11:30am, 5th grade 1pm-4pm) They will be dropped off or picked up from the Opera House, NOT SCHOOL, depending on whether they rehearse in the morning or afternoon! DONATE A DOLL! The Drama department needs your old Barbies! We use these for our costume design units. Please give your old dolls a new life by giving them to us!

Congratulations to the cast of Willy Wonka, Jr.! Be sure to get your golden tickets to this scrumpdillyicious production!

Video Production

Our new Video Production minor is gearing up for some great stuff this year! And you don’t have to be a minor to get involved! Kid auditioned to be on the news team in the beginning of September. Mrs. Klein, who is in charge of the ten elementary kids and Mrs. Joly, who is in charge of the seven middle schoolers, are getting the SCAPA Morning News on the air soon. They will use elementary kids twice a week, and middle schoolers three times a week to produce the show. Kids will read and write their own stories on traditional school news are such as birthdays, announcements and school lunch menus. However, they will go beyond that to do features on interesting subjects around our school. Mr. Love’s STLP (Student Technology Leadership Program) kids will also be involved with the production.

Vocal

SCAPA Lafayette vocal majors and Lafayette choirs have much to be excited about and proud of so far this year. Sixteen freshmen singers were recently selected to participate in Jr. High All-State Choir, sponsored by the Kentucky chapter of the American Choral Director’s Association. Congratulations to: Sarah Caton, Hannah Daniel, Alex Nelson (SCAPA), Chandler Fritz, Emily Maggard, Andra Boland, Amie Huesman (SCAPA), Brodie Craig (SCAPA), Christina Villaflor (SCAPA), Despina Wilson (SCAPA), Haley Goode, Camilla Lester, Michael White (SCAPA), Hans Hayes (SCAPA), Tanner Hoertz (SCAPA), Tomer Eres (SCAPA) and Michael Roach (SCAPA).

Two major events for SCAPA voice and LHS choir took place in September. The first event was the Blue Grass Choral Music Festival at the University of Kentucky on September 19th and 20th. The students rehearsed Friday evening and all day Saturday and then presented a concert in the afternoon. Several Lafayette and SCAPA students were chosen as soloists for the performance. Those chosen were: Alaina Broderson (SCAPA), Haley Goode, Emma Jackson (SCAPA), Sydney Steele (SCAPA), and Ellie Todd (SCAPA). In all, 70 Lafayette students participated in the event! Following the festival, on September 24th, all SCAPA voice majors participated in the first vocal master class of the year. Dr. Angelique Clay (UK) was the clinician this month. She focused on different aspects of the audition process while conducting mock auditions with Ryan Story, Sydney Steele, Gabby Barker and Alex Koszewski, all vocal majors. Over 40 students were in attendance. What an energetic and inspiring way to start the year!

Coming up in October is the LHS 4th Annual Choir Gala and Silent Auction on October 10th. This event will feature all four advanced choirs as well as all SCAPA vocal majors singing solos or small ensembles. This will take place at the LHS cafeteria and will begin at 7:00pm. Come out and support these students and enjoy an evening of fun and great entertainment!

Signup forms went home with kids a couple weeks ago. Contact Annaliese Bratcher if you have a 4th or 5th grader interested in joining. Email ambratch@yahoo.com. Any 4th or 5th grade child is eligible to join and compete for university scholarships.

Notice that one contest emphasizes writing ability, another emphasizes math and science. The teams compete by answering questions based an all areas of core curriculum including arts, dance, music, and more. In fact the final question that decided the team winner last year combined music and math -- It was something like "If 5 quarters, 3 trios and a sextet are performing at the same time at a concert, how many individual musicians are performing at that concert?

Last year we had two of the top students for the writing competition. Taylor Bagley won a 4-year scholarship, and Megan Leiter was runner-up for the same scholarship.

Teachers please encourage students and parents to get involved this year. Please consider reaching out especially to those students who may need help making friends, studying core curriculum, experiencing academic competition, developing team skills, and those who may need financial assistance for a university education. The philosophy behind this competition is more about win-win collaboration to achieve academic goals and less about win-lost cutthroat competition. It is unique in the nation and has already motivated more than 1,000 Fayette County School children to work harder on academics and enjoy learning more.

Alumni News

Welcome back Kimberly Shaw!

K ShawMs. Kimberly Shaw, a 1995 SCAPA graduate, has been hired by the Actors Guild of Lexington to be their managing director. Kimberly was a piano major her junior and senior year of high school. One of her memorable credits while in SCAPA was accompanying the 1995 production of "Peter Pan." After high school, Kimberly attended Spelman College where she started studying piano, but ended up with a degree in Theatre Management. Following college she worked for Disney as an entertainment manager and for Sesame Street Live! as the assistant company manager. She then attended Columbia University where she received a masters degree in Theatre Management and Producing.

Kimberly joined the national tour of "Little Shop of Horrors" as their Associate Company Manager, returned to Disney for a time as a special events manager, and spent a year at Princeton as the Operations Manager for the Richardson Auditorium. Kimberly is glad to be back in Lexington and her parents are thrilled to have her home. She sends this message to the students of SCAPA. "If you want a career in the arts and you are willing to work hard, you can have one. Don't let anyone try to talk you out of making a life for yourself in the arts because it is possible!"

The Art of Parenting

Practice Makes Excellent, Not Perfect

AOP The effective practice we will address this month is: Artists practice. They do and redo. They try, erase and try again. They are constantly striving to achieve excellence. Perhaps the underlying message here is that artists expect to make mistakes. They give themselves permission to not get it right the first time. They assume that accomplishing a great work is going to require great effort including alterations, corrections, and revisions.

However, you don’t see artists begin painting or sculpting without first making sketches. You don’t see orchestras give concerts, dancers put on recitals, or casts perform plays without rehearsals. You don’t see writers publish books without editors. While they may accept the inevitability of mistakes, artists clearly attempt to minimize their occurrence in the final product.

My son has a CD on which John Denver is preparing to record a song and you can hear the conversation between he and the audio technician. He asks John Denver whether this will be a take or just practice. John Denver responds, “They’re all practice.” This goes right along with a Family Circle cartoon I have framed on my desk in which the grandmother is telling one of her grandsons, “If you’re afraid you’ll make a mistake, you won’t make anything.”

In life, practice and mistakes go hand in hand. Hopefully the more we do of the former, the fewer there are of the latter. However, the worst mistake we can make is one from which we fail to learn anything.

How do we adopt the artists’ attitude of accepting mistakes and commitment to practice in our parenting? First of all, we admit to ourselves that most of what we do as parents is practice. We try something and if it gets the desired response from our kids, we use it again. Along the way we make mistakes. We need to own those mistakes, identify why they were mistakes, accept responsibility for our actions, apologize to our kids for them, and attempt to do better as we continue to practice. If you don’t think your kids know you make mistakes, you're mistaken. And if you think they’ll lose respect for you if you admit them, wrong again.

Secondly, we must extend the same attitude toward mistakes and practice to our children. Remember they are practicing too and they are going to make mistakes. If we can help them learn to recognize and accept responsibility for their mistakes while they are young, and the results are less serious, perhaps we can help them learn to avoid mistakes that carry with them more severe consequences as they get older. We can attempt to accomplish this by not overreacting and avoiding the use of punishment based on a knee-jerk reaction.

If we want our children to achieve excellence in all aspects of their lives – manners, communication, relationships, academic performance and artistic expression - we must emphasize the value of practice. At the same time we must teach them not to be afraid of making mistakes or of being wrong. The best way to do this is by example. The most important thing we can practice as parents is what we preach!
