Everyone please take a look at your calendars and figure out what days/times you are available to help with Amazon Gift wrapping. Sign-ups began Sunday 10/2 and while slots fill quickly, some will open up later too. Anyone 18 or older can participate. This is such a simple way to support SCAPA without having to take anything out of your own budget. Give 4 hours of your time during several available shifts at Amazon off Leestown Rd. from Nov. 25th through Dec. 23rd, and Amazon will make a donation to Friends. It's fun, easy and a great opportunity for us in a difficult financial climate. And I will personally be glad to sign up for any shift if someone would like a SCAPA partner out at Amazon. Current SCAPA families, as a member of FOAS each family will soon receive the school directory. It will be sent home with your child. This is part of our budget and one of many things that FOAS provides. It contains student information, teacher information, committee contacts, and also student major and minors. Please use this as a tool to communicate SCAPA information. It is very helpful and a lifesaver on nights when you can't make the carpool work for instance! There will be additional directories for $5 each in case you need another. Elementary did a great job with the Innisbrook fundraiser this year with a total of $5,337.00 in sales and $2,463.45 in profit for FOAS. Huge Penguin clap for elementary! Be on the lookout for a new discount card program that 4th through 8th grade will be selling this October. We are working on establishing the vendors and discounts and more information should be coming home soon. This is a new approach and we will need everyone's help to ensure a successful program and to guarantee funding for all our arts areas. Coffee/Tea sales are gearing up for the holiday season. Be thinking of those special people in your life that you will want to buy some coffee or tea for. Hot chocolate is also a great gift for neighbors and friends at work. Keep bringing in those Box Tops – CLIP MORE/EARN MORE. And Kroger cards are working hard for FOAS! Please remember to load it and use it. From Beth Randolph, Bluegrass PrincipalDear SCAPA Family, As October rolls in and the weather turns cooler, SCAPA heats up with an abundance of activities in all the arts and academic areas. What a wonderful place to see students working diligently on worthwhile endeavors at all hours of the day and night. SCAPA is definitely a “hopping” place with all the events that are constantly happening and the preparation that must take place for them. Sometimes there is so much going on that we fail to adequately acknowledge some of the wonderful experiences the students are having. We are approximately seven and a half weeks into the school year and already our school has accomplished quite a bit. The middle school vocal music majors have been the featured entertainment for the statewide conference of the Kentucky Department of Education’s Department of Pupil Personnel and the Prevent Child Abuse Conference. At both performances, the students received high acclaim for their fabulous vocal work. Our middle and high school strings students are preparing to perform for the University of Kentucky Scholarship Banquet on the 11th of October, while simultaneously preparing for their chamber music concert with piano students on November 17th. This concert will also help prepare the strings students for their KMEA solo and ensemble festival on November 19th. The piano students are perfecting duets for the chamber music concert as well as solo pieces for upcoming performances. Our middle school band students continue to practice diligently for their honored February performance at KMEA. Having been chosen as one of two band performances for the statewide conference, Ms. Barker and Dr. Akel persevere to ready the students for this all-important performance. Down the hall from the music classes, the visual art students work on projects designed by Mr. Love and Ms. Thompson, as well as, create pieces for the upcoming Art Lease on November 18th. Mulan, Jr. along with classroom projects and assignments keep our drama students actively engaged. Creative writing majors always have a story to tell and they write away in their classes with Ms. Carnes. Check out some of their stories on the Creative Writing website. Finally, our dancers have been learning new technique and beginning preparations for Dance SCAPA. Grants have been secured to bring in guest artists and choreographers to give students new opportunities and expose them to different and cutting-edge ideas. Additionally, our eighth graders just returned from New York City where they saw many historical landmarks, two Broadway shows, and an art museum of their choosing. While all of these fabulous artistic opportunities abound, our academic teachers create their own magic for the students as they teach the required curriculum in all the academic subject areas. The recent release of our school’s Kentucky Core Content Test (KCCT) scores attests to this once again. SCAPA continues to pursue its goal of 100% of our students scoring proficient or distinguished in math and reading. We have come close once again, as our numbers for the 2011 Kentucky Core Content Test (KCCT) look like this:
We are proud of the students and their hard work on the Kentucky Core Content Tests. As we study and analyze these results, we look forward to finding ways to improve in all areas as we strive to help every student do their best academically and artistically. We had a busy September and have already taken our first steps into the new state assessment program. Our sophomore students took the PLAN test on September 21 and we hope to have results back in the next several weeks. The school will compare the students’ PLAN results with the growth they show when they take the ACT test during their junior year. Students will have a lot of support in their classes, as well as after school and Saturday opportunities, to work on the skills and concepts needing improvement over the next year and a half. Our freshmen and juniors took diagnostic tests on September 21. The information from these tests will be entered into the online test prep program (TCA) that can help all students prepare for the PLAN and ACT exams. Please check online for more info regarding the program at www.lafayette.fcps.net. Our seniors had a wonderful opportunity to hear from college recruiters, community members, and career educators, at our Senior Career Day. We know many of them took away valuable information to share with parents as they make decisions about next year. The Central Kentucky College Night will be held downtown on October 17 and we will host a college night here at LHS on October 25. Please see our website for more information about these events. Another important date is October 15. Students interested in the National Merit Competition must take the PSAT exam. This exam is an optional exam, but it is the only exam that qualifies students for National Merit standing and National Merit scholarship opportunities. Registration information is available on our website. Our next school-wide assessment activity will be November 1st. Students in all grade levels will have an assessment or an activity to prepare them for upcoming assessments. Please be sure to mark your calendar for that day and please avoid any morning appointments for students outside of school, if possible. Again, there are a lot of changes this year in Kentucky for your students, our staff, and the way we are teaching and measuring success. Please stay tuned for more information. Be sure to sign up for new FCPS Superintendent Tom Shelton’s email newsletter, Lessons From the Road, so that you can keep up to date with important updates and information. In this month’s newsletter there is a short survey, asking your opinions on some of the good and not-so-good things about our school system. Please take time to answer this survey and express your support of the arts in our schools. This will help us send a clear message that we expect funding levels to remain the same or be increased despite other budget cuts. The arts are a PROVEN way to help students academically, socially, and emotionally. Marching band also helps our students physically! Your child’s Gifted Student Services Plan is now a part of the ILP. To access this information, please click on the Parent page of the ILP website to get started. Once there, click on “Gifted” to view your child’s Gifted Student Services Plan (GSSP). If you do not have the login information for the ILP website, please see your child’s school counselor for the information. The ILP login information must be given only to the parent/guardian of the student and a signature is required.
Kentucky recognizes giftedness in five specific areas:
A committee of classroom and special area teachers plan/collaborate to develop the GSSP for each student based on specific areas of giftedness and each child’s individual needs, interests and strengths. Your child’s GSSP is intended to remind you that the SCAPA staff recognizes your student’s specialized learning needs, is committed to insuring your child’s continued progress and that a specific plan is in place for meeting your child’s needs.
Each year Mrs. Sarantakos invites students to create a work of art using pumpkins and other gourds to depict a favorite book character. Students may bring their creations to the library during the last two weeks of October, 17-28, for display. Winners will be announced on Monday, October 31st. It’s not too soon to start making plans for your pumpkin artwork!
Remember to send your food donations for this final week and a half of the God’s Pantry Food Drive. The proposed items are Canned Meat & Beans: Tuna, Salmon, Chicken, Beef Stew, Peanut Butter, Canned and Dried Beans. However, they can use any items you have. Remember, it is never too late to give!
The SCAPA MathCounts Team has begun holding practices on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons.

The fall matches are “Quiz Bowl” style where speed counts and the fastest students buzz in first. Throughout the fall we will also practice MathCounts style questions which are paper and pencil problem solving tests done both individually and as a team. The official MathCounts competitions will be held in February and March. Good luck to the SCAPA MathCounts team!

You are invited to make a big difference at Lafayette High School by joining one of the school's committees. While the Site-Based Decision-Making Council approves policies and procedures, it is the committees that actually put them together. These committees will be meeting soon to set meeting dates and times and to officially establish which people are on the committees and, thus, have voting privileges. It is imperative that we get more parents and students on these committees that do the work that is presented to the SBDM for approval. Budget (for band, choir, orchestra, art, academics, etc.), discipline, curriculum choices, and policies about everything from field trips to testing are too important not to have parents' input. SBDM are SCAPA parents Tracy Schultz McIntosh, Chris Aldridge, and Molly Toney and Dave Ewen.

Two SCAPA Parents Appear on Parents in Action On September 7th, Carolyn Waterbury-Tieman, SCAPA parent and Arts Facilitator, and Candace James, SCAPA parent and Asso. Dir. For State and Federal Programs, Gifted and Talented, were guests of Judi Conrad on Channel 13’s “Parents in Action.”
Ms. Suzie Thiel, dance instructor at the University of Kentucky, visited the BG Contemporary Dancers on September 13 and the BG Ballet students on Thursday, September 15. We always appreciate when a guest artist from the community takes the time to come and work with our students. We are grateful to the teachers for making these experiences possible for our students. There will be other guest artists visiting the dance program in October.

On September 9th we were treated to presentations that involved two former SCAPA students. Miss Taylor Eldred, ’06 drama major, played the role of Little Red Riding Hood in the UK Opera Theatre’s presentation of “Little Red’s Most Unusual Day” for our 4th, 5th and 6th graders. Later that afternoon Miss Mara Greene, ’02 visual arts major, visited the middle school visual arts majors. Read more in Sept. 16 edition of Penguin Pride.
Within the first two weeks of September, the middle school vocal majors were invited to perform for the Department of Pupil Personnel Conference on September 8th at the Embassy Suites Hotel and the Prevent Child Abuse Kentucky Conference on September 12th at the Lexington Convention Center. The students were under the musical direction and accompaniment of Mrs. Millie Fields and were also accompanied by SCAPA parent, Candace James on the flute. The program included the following pieces:

Recently, during one of my trips through the hallways at BG SCAPA, I was struck by the numerous creative assignments gracing our walls. It reminded me that not all parents have a chance to walk these hallways and admire our students’ work, so I thought it might help to add a section to the newsletter where these are showcased. Not only is the work impressive, but the creative nature of the assignments our teachers design for our students is inspiring. Mrs. Aldridge has the 7th grade students design a shoebox diorama to depict a scene from the book they read over the summer. The scene should be an important event and should include characters from the story. In addition, they are to write a summary of the scene to go with their diorama. In addition, they are asked to take the role of a graphic designer for the publishing company of the book and create a cover complete with illustrations, author, title, author information, book description and reviews. As you can see, the results are very impressive.

Mr. Lindsey, 5th Grade, has a Star Wars Bulletin Board with the theme, “May the Fours (not Force) Be With You.” It is a teaching bulletin board, with lots of pertinent instruction on doing well with open response questions from Star Wars characters. He is currently displaying the 4’s from a recent Social Studies assessment on Landforms.

These are the 5th graders’ edible cells. Ms. Sergent does this project to help students learn about the parts of a cell, called “organelles”, that each organelle has a specific function necessary for life. Students use food to create a model of either a plant or animal cell, and must show some basic parts, such as cell wall, cell membrane, nucleus, and mitochondria. Then, each student presents his/her cell to the class and explains the functions of each organelle.

The 6th graders just completed their Elements Facebook Page Project. Ms. Sergent designed this project to help students learn about the characteristics and properties of an element that make it unique. It is also an introduction to the periodic table and how elements are related. Students create “chats” between their element and other elements (friends or frienemies), while conveying information, such as their element’s chemical symbol, atomic number, boiling and melting points.

Throughout the first weeks of school, the 6th graders learned the Elements of Art and the Principles of Design. After mastering the vocabulary and definitions, included in both, the 6th graders were asked to use their knowledge of “LINE” (an Element of Art) to create an artwork.
The students were grouped together at tables with an arrangement of flowers in front of them. Each artist selected a color to use for their piece and unknowingly selected the color of their mat. Focusing on the details in front of them, the students painted from life, a line drawing of the flowers. This activity taught students how to visually decipher what and how to create a painting. Their artistic decisions included: establishing a composition, drawing from life or observation, making visual decisions on how to reproduce a 3-dimensional object on paper, and lastly, demonstrating their understandings of what a “LINE DRAWING” is. Each artist included a quote about their experience of painting and how it was special to them. They also completed a self-evaluation form, building writing skills that included a description and analysis of their paintings.
As an introduction to color, the mats for their paintings and the color of paint that each student selected are complementary colors. The students will soon be learning more about color and all that it entails.

These are examples of Ms. Joly’s Spanish “Shoe Verbs” from her classroom. Students were given a verb that is stem-changing in the present tense and each had to show how that verb is conjugated. The non-changing forms stay outside the shoe! The individual pictures are from Andrew Padilla (pink shoe), Victoria Hall (rainbow colored boot), and Blakeley Burger (sandal).

The sixth grade is a transitional year for our students. Not only do they go from elementary to middle school – littles to middles – they are quickly becoming more independent and finding their own individual paths, both socially and academically. With that in mind, we start out the sixth grade language arts class with a unit in ‘change.’ The selections that we read include biographies, memoires and short stories that have themes of ‘where do I belong’ and ‘how do I fit in.’ The Fishbowl Project is designed not only to help each of us to get to know each other better, but it also gives the young middle school student time to reflect upon and assess his or her personal good qualities and the things that make them feel like they belong.

Explore the Designer in You… Create a Digital Logo! Throughout the first weeks of school, the 8th graders became acquainted with the Adobe Photoshop Elements 2.0 program. They learned new vocabulary and experimented with the tools available in this version of Photoshop. In addition to navigating their way through the program, the students reviewed what “good design” is and how the elements of art and principles of design are integrated into digital artworks. For their first project, the students were asked to create three digital logos or advertisements. Their designs were to include an original idea (that may be inspired by existing brands, logos, or advertisements), descriptive text, a catchy slogan (if desired), and an eye-catching logo or symbol. By using these components together, the students were to demonstrate their knowledge of how to develop a digital logo or advertisement.
Before constructing their pieces on the computer, the students had to present their ideas and sketches. Once their ideas were approved, the students were able to move forward and create their designs. Each artist completed a self-evaluation form, building writing skills that included a description and analysis of all three of their designs. The students also participated in two-day critique; each design was projected onto the screen while students discussed possible strengths and weaknesses. As a result, the students were given the artistic decision to select what they felt was their most successful piece to display in the hallway.
This introductory project to Adobe Photoshop Elements 2.0 allowed students to create a personal design and experiment with digital art materials. We are very fortunate to have just received a more up-to-date version of Photoshop, Photoshop CS4, thanks to the help of one of our parents who ignited this improvement in the curriculum. The students will be using CS4 for their second project, a “visual autobiography”, which will include a more mature approach to the tools and artistic avenues available in digital art.

Each year Mr. Love has the visual arts majors create a name plate that reflects a little bit about who they are. Here are this year’s elementary and middle school art majors.


The drama minors, under the direction of Ms. Lab, are designing costumes for this year’s productions of “Disney’s Mulan, Jr.”

The 8th graders have been studying astronomy. During the first week of school they learned about the history of flight and space exploration. After viewing some examples of mission patches from the U.S. Space program, the students were asked to create their own patch depicting their class’s mission for this year. These patches will be on display for the duration of the school year.

SCAPA was invited to have a table set up during the Chinese American Moon Festival on Saturday, September 10th at the Moon Dance Amphitheater in the Beaumont Center. Jennifer Gorena, FOAS president, handed out playbills announcing the 2011-12 Production Season. Her daughters, Sydney and Camille, provided stylish hair feathers. At the neighboring table, Mrs. Gunn, 4th grade teacher, and her daughter, Tynan, junior visual arts major, painted faces with Chinese symbols and characters. Several SCAPA students performed during the event on the main stage. Thank you to everyone who represented SCAPA so impressively during this annual cultural event.

FOAS RECEIVES GRANT FOR AUDITORIUM CAMPAIGN FUNDIn July 2011, The W. Paul and Lucille Caudill Little Foundation granted a matching grant of $450,000 to the Friends of the Arts School,Inc. for the purpose of building an auditorium for SCAPA. In order to receive this grant, the matching funds must be raised by August 31, 2012.

Director of the Lafayette Orchestra Dept.

I have been teaching for seventeen years now. I have a Master’s degree in Child Development from Eastern Michigan University. I’m originally from Kentucky but have been living and teaching in Michigan for the past twenty years. I’m very excited to be back home to my home state. I have taught Kindergarten and first grade. I have also taught Reading Recovery for nine years and have been a library teacher. In addition I have been a literacy coach and a literacy intervention specialist. I have two daughters who are fifteen and sixteen. My youngest daughter is very good at sports and my oldest daughter plays guitar and sings. She was in the top honor choir for Michigan and we travelled all over for competitions. I live in Winchester near all of my family. I am a literacy coach for BSMS and SCAPA. I am at BSMS on MTW and at SCAPA on ThF. I’m very excited to be at SCAPA and want to help as much as I can.
Hello SCAPA friends and family! My name is Ms. Thompson and I’m thrilled to be a part of the magic that happens here at SCAPA as the new Visual Arts Educator and Academic Dean. This is my first year teaching but I have a lot of experience working with students and developing creative lesson plans.
Ms. Sims will be teaching Dance Elements. Ms. Sims is currently a dance instructor at the University of Kentucky as well as the Assistant Director of the University of Kentucky Dance Ensemble while pursuing her Ph.D. in dance education.
My name is Nell Line and I am the Reading and Math Specialist. After graduating from the University of Kentucky with a B.A. in History, Special Education Certification, and a Masters in Secondary Education, I taught in Fayette County for thirty years. As a Social Studies teacher and a Special Education teacher, I taught at Lexington Junior High School and Lexington Traditional Magnet School. Since my retirement I have been a Special Education Facilitator, Special Education teacher, and a long term substitute at SCAPA. I am excited about teaching at SCAPA and feel that this is an excellent opportunity to assist students. My goal this year is to enable students to improve their math and reading skills which will help them to build their confidence in these subjects so that they will be successful. I am married and have two children, Kathryn and David Spencer, who live in Charlotte, North Carolina.
Here are the 7th graders using the new electronic balances SCAPA received from Lexmark this year. Students used the balances to find the change in mass of different rocks over time as they were mechanically weathered by shaking the closed containers.

SCAPA Theatre majors news - Miss Lab has worked with Channel 13's videographer Dave Stawicki for the past three years on the district's Spotlight narrators. Each school in the district is featured in an informative video that is aired on FCPS Channel 13. Miss Lab chosses students from her Theatre I & II classes to do the voice-over narrations. Pictured are Dave Stawicki with Beza Chavez, Mariah Mowbray, Sophia Sawaya, and Dejah Garner.

We would like to make plaques to hang outside each of the arts rooms with the names of graduates and what they are doing professionally. Mr. Love has one on the wall just outside his door. Every year he takes his new 4th graders out in the hall, reads the names of past students and what they are doing, and tells the current students that if they dedicate themselves to their work, someday their name will be on the plaque. This is a great motivator! We want every arts teacher to have the opportunity to do the same thing. General Mills Corporation, sponsor of the Box Tops For Education program, has been involved in giving to educational programs since 1996. Over the past 13 years, participating schools have earned over $300 million dollars in funding. The Box Tops program is a simple way for our school to receive money without having to write grants, sell products, work hours, or buy things we don’t want or need. As a parent, relative, or friend of SCAPA, all you have to do is clip the “Official Box Top Coupon” off of the products you already buy and use. A complete list of these products can be found at boxtops4education.com. After clipping, send the box tops to school with your student. Each homeroom teacher has a container in their classroom for collection. Each month, the box tops are collected and counted, with the top collecting homeroom earning a prize. Come on SCAPA Penguins, keep clipping and collecting those box tops. Let’s make this an awesome box tops year.
