From the President Jennifer GorenaDear SCAPA,
Our fall musical has been set in motion. Mulan, Mushu and the cast are on schedule to save the Emperor from the Huns on Nov, 10 - 12 at the Opera House. The producers are working very hard to maintain the standards of our fall musical and will need lots of help to make it all happen. I hope many of you get involved and share your talents and time. You never know how your connections, skills or knowledge may be able to help SCAPA. Being a part of our productions is a lot of fun and definitely part of the SCAPA experience. Contact Angie DiMeo (angiedlex@insightbb.com) if you want to know more about how you might be able to help. The August FOAS meeting was very informative. We covered news around fundraising, the productions and learned about some new innovative performance/fundraising opportunities. I was glad to see some new faces and hope to see more at our September meeting on the 22nd at 6:30pm. It is known that being an active participant in your child's school encourages your child to be an active participant in their own education. And while you may not have time in your schedule to sign up for every committee, I would encourage you to come and be informed about what Friends supports and how we do it. Again, your personal connections or job skills may provide a new solution to an old problem. Finally, a reminder on how to do a little fundraising the easy way:

From Beth Randolph, Bluegrass PrincipalDear SCAPA Family, The SCAPA Picnic was a success in every way. The crowd was excellent and it certainly helped raise some much-needed funds for our busy year ahead. Thanks to all that contributed and to all the parents that devoted much of their time to make certain the event was a hit. Monday evening, September 12th SCAPA will be open for all the parents to meet the SCAPA teachers at the annual Open House. What a great way to see where your child spends his/her day and a fabulous opportunity to get acquainted with the teachers! Watch for a flyer and email to come home with specifics about the event. SCAPA is a once-in-a-lifetime place for students and parents to become involved in life-changing events. Mulan begins that list as rehearsals get underway this month. Students involved in the production will have an experience they will remember forever and parents have the opportunity to contribute in meaningful ways to make the production stellar. A second opportunity for participation is the SCAPA Speech Team. Auditions will be held on the 8th and 9th to select the team that will represent our school throughout the state in forensics’ competitions. What a fun and significant way for students to improve their acting and speaking skills. Parent assistance is at a premium in this activity as well. Finally, Girls on the Run is making its second debut at SCAPA. Twice weekly, our elementary girls work to improve their endurance and health as they workout behind our school. These extra-curricular events simply supplement the already fantastic artistic and academic instruction the SCAPA students receive every day. September, the month known by Americans to celebrate the benefits of laboring hard, is no different at SCAPA. September at SCAPA is the month where much of our hard work begins in earnest. Come be a part and see the dividends it pays for the students that participate. Sincerely, From Vicki Ritchie, LHS PrincipalDear Friends of the Arts,
Although we are only in the second month of school, there is already so much going on at Lafayette! Teachers and students were able to focus on academics from Day One because of our pre-registration process. Counselors have already met with many groups of students to discuss the uses of the Individual Learning Plan (ILP) and the upcoming state tests. We hosted our parent Open House night and shared school and classroom information with lots of families. Teaching and learning are going on every day as we gear up for the changes in the way our students and school are assessed. Our sophomore students will take the PLAN test on September 21. This test is part of our new state accountability system and can be a predictor of performance on the ACT. On that same day, our freshmen will take a PLAN diagnostic test and our juniors will take an ACT diagnostic test. The results of these tests will be used to help students target their areas of needed growth. Please discuss these tests with your students and encourage them to do their best. Our seniors will participate in College and Career activities on September 21. Our junior students will take the ACT on March 6, 2012. The ACT is also part of our new state accountability. We have an online test prep program (TCA) that can help all students prepare for the ACT. The results from the September 21 diagnostic test will be downloaded into the TCA program, which will individualize the tutorial program for each student. We have information on our website about TCA and the dates of Saturday prep sessions to be offered here at school. Please check online for more info at www.lafayette.fcps.net. You can find more information about the new state accountability system on our website, as well. We are looking forward to a busy and exciting, but rewarding school year for our students. Please watch the website or the PTSA newsletter for more information about what is going on here at Lafayette. Vicki Ritchie by Carolyn Waterbury-Tieman

We meet each month and our work is vital to SCAPA. We need everyone of you to become and active member of FOAS! You can start by attending the following meetings at 6:30pm in Room 146:
If you want to be in the know and have a say, this is the place to be. Attention LHS SCAPA ParentsYou are invited to make a big difference at Lafayette High School by joining one of the school's committees. While the Site-Based Decision-Making Council approves policies and procedures, it is the committees that actually put them together. These committees will be meeting soon to set meeting dates and times and to officially establish which people are on the committees and, thus, have voting privileges. It is imperative that we get more parents and students on these committees that do the work that is presented to the SBDM for approval. Budget (for band, choir, orchestra, art, academics, etc.), discipline, curriculum choices, and policies about everything from field trips to testing are too important not to have parents' input. SBDM are SCAPA parents Tracy Schultz McIntosh, Chris Aldridge, and Molly Toney and Dave Ewen. Please help make sure that your opinions about our school and its programs are heard. We NEED YOU! Thanks! Tracy McIntosh SCAPA Back to School Bash a Big Success! What do you get when a team of parents has a vision and you add the support of their school’s administrators and faculty plus the aid of their staff and you divide the tasks between people who take ownership of their responsibilities and then multiply that times the energy and enthusiasm of the students? Well, you get a Back to School event like the one that took place at 400 Lafayette Parkway on Sunday, October 28th! There were faces being painted, hair being feathered, rings being tossed, people being arrested, people singing, people eating, people bidding, people climbing, people sliding, people being caricatured, and people getting soaked by water balloons. I believe it is safe to say that a great time was had by all! We are deeply indebted to all those parents, students, and staff who volunteered countless hours to make this such a special occasion. We can’t wait to see what you have in store for next year! First Day Back to SCAPA

Reinventing the Book ReportBy Eva Aldridge 7th/8th Grade Language Arts
Over the summer incoming 7th and 8th grade students were required to read two books from the Language Arts Summer Reading List. Once they returned to school, I asked these students to use one of these books to prepare a Book Talk for their classmates. First, they needed to start their presentation with a Bang! and this is where the props and costumes came in. Some students began by reciting monologues they had written. They spoke to their peers as if they were a character from their book. They became Heathcliff (Wuthering Heights), Babbity Rabbity (The Tales of Beetle the Bard), and Katniss Everdeen (The Hunger Games series). Other students brought some very creative props they had prepared. There was everything from a spaceship made of Leggos (Ender’s Game) to a bow made from a stick and yarn (The Hunger Games series). Brooms (The Harry Potter series), a baseball (Heat), a noose (And Then There Were None), and even a switchcomb instead of a switchblade (The Outsiders) appeared in our classroom. Squeals of delight echoed through the classroom as students connected the monologues, props, and costumes to their favorite characters and books. It was a language arts teacher’s dream to have so many students excited about their summer reading.
We just completed our final Book Talks this week, and you might think there would be a sigh of relief from my students, but instead there is enthusiasm in their voices as they bombard me with questions such as “Will we have Book Talks every quarter?”

We would like to make plaques to hang outside each of the arts rooms with the names of graduates and what they are doing professionally. Mr. Love has one on the wall just outside his door. Every year he takes his new 4th graders out in the hall, reads the names of past students and what they are doing, and tells the current students that if they dedicate themselves to their work, someday their name will be on the plaque. This is a great motivator! We want every arts teacher to have the opportunity to do the same thing. Please send me your name, year you graduated, major and what you are doing professionally so that we can expand and maintain this tradition. My address is carolyn.tieman@fayette.kyschools.us. We are looking forward to hearing from you and celebrating your success.

The Arts Roundtable is a place where we can share valuable information about the essential role of the arts in our lives and the lives of our children. (Please submit items to Carolyn Waterbury-Tieman, carolyn.tieman@fayette.kyschools.us, by the 20th of each month.) |
He said "Doctor wants his child to become a doctor.........
Engineer wants his child to become engineer......
Businessman wants his ward to become CEO.....
BUT a teacher also wants his child to become one of them..!!!!
Nobody wants to become a teacher BY CHOICE" ....Very sad but that's the truth.....!!!
The dinner guests were sitting around the table discussing life. One man, a CEO, decided to explain the problem with education. He argued, "What's a kid going to learn from someone who decided his best option in life was to become a teacher?"
To stress his point he said to another guest: "You're a teacher, Bonnie. Be honest. What do you make?"
Teacher Bonnie, who had a reputation for honesty and frankness replied,
"You want to know what I make?
(She paused for a second, then began...)
"Well, I make kids work harder than they ever thought they could.
I make a C+ feel like the Congressional Medal of Honor winner.
I make kids sit through 40 minutes of class time when their parents can't
make them sit for 5 min. without an I Pod, Game Cube or movie rental.
You want to know what I make? (She paused again and looked at each and every person at the table)
I make kids wonder.
I make them question.
I make them apologize and mean it.
I make them have respect and take responsibility for their actions.
I teach them how to write and then I make them write. Keyboarding isn't everything.
I make them read, read, read.
I make them show all their work in math. They use their God given brain, not the man-made calculator.
I make my students from other countries learn everything they need to know about English while preserving their unique cultural identity.
I make my classroom a place where all my students feel safe.
Finally, I make them understand that if they use the gifts they were given, work hard, and follow their hearts, they can succeed in life.
( Bonnie paused one last time and then continued.)
Then, when people try to judge me by what I make, with me knowing money isn't everything, I can hold my head up high and pay no attention because they are ignorant. You want to know what I make?
I MAKE A DIFFERENCE IN ALL YOUR LIVES, EDUCATING KIDS AND PREPARING THEM TO BECOME CEO's, AND DOCTORS, AND ENGINEERS..........
What do you make Mr. CEO?
His jaw dropped; he was speechless.

SCAPA FUNdraising Opportunities
There are 3 ways that you can financially support SCAPA all year long with minimal effort!
Remember that when you contribute to SCAPA it benefits every student, grades 4-12, in every arts area. You can make a difference!
General Mills Corporation, sponsor of the Box Tops For Education program, has been involved in giving to educational programs since 1996. Over the past 13 years, participating schools have earned over $300 million dollars in funding. The Box Tops program is a simple way for our school to receive money without having to write grants, sell products, work hours, or buy things we don’t want or need. As a parent, relative, or friend of SCAPA, all you have to do is clip the “Official Box Top Coupon” off of the products you already buy and use. A complete list of these products can be found at boxtops4education.com. After clipping, send the box tops to school with your student. Each homeroom teacher has a container in their classroom for collection. Each month, the box tops are collected and counted, with the top collecting homeroom earning a prize. Come on SCAPA Penguins, keep clipping and collecting those box tops. Let’s make this an awesome box tops year.
Please download a copy for each of the FCPS approved volunteers in your family. Completed forms may be turned in to Ms. Barbara Talbert at the front office of Bluegrass SCAPA. Thank you so much for your commitment to making SCAPA great!
Please be aware that a records check is required in order to participate in volunteer activities in the Fayette County School system.
