As it is in Heaven

AS It Is In Heaven

By Arlene Hutton

The year is 1837 and you need only travel just down the road to the Shaker community at Pleasant Hill, Kentucky, where all is not as well ordered as one would expect. In an organized religious society where the significance of the group supersedes the value of the individual, there is little tolerance for behavior that draws attention to one person. The harmonious existence of the entire village is threatened when one member claims to have been visited by angels. And if that weren’t upsetting enough, the experience of ecstatic possession appears to be catching. Can Eldress Hannah dispute the reality of these visitations just because she has not been privileged to experience them firsthand? Are they real, imagined, or creations of convenience? In the end, if the result is increased faith, enhanced spiritual creativity, greater productivity, and peace, does it really matter? Join the Sisters as they attempt to achieve heaven on Earth through work, song and dance.

Into the Woods

Into the Woods

Where else, but in a fractured fairy tale, would a childless couple discover that their condition is the result of a witch’s curse and can only be reversed with a potion? This is the shocking news revealed to the Baker and his wife by their neighbor, the Witch. Furthermore, the ingredients for the potion happen to be a cow as white as milk, a cape as red as blood, hair as yellow as corn, and a slipper as pure as gold. And where are they to go to acquire these unique items? ‘Into the woods’ of course. Come along with some of your favorite, fairy tale characters as they pursue what they believe will allow them to live “happily ever after.” Observe the lengths to which they are willing to go to get what they want. Watch as they reap the consequences of their actions and ultimately recognize the necessity for community responsibility. You may change your mind about the presumed innocence in the tales we tell our children.

Hamlet or Did Father Reeeeealy Know Best?
Hamet

Adapted by Nancy Linehan Charles

William Shakespeare was intrigued with the consequences people experience when they make bad choices. He observed that poor decisions were frequently the result of allowing greed, jealousy, power and revenge to guide the decision-making process. He often warned his audience, “Pick your friends well – watch whom you listen to.” Considering that Hamlet chooses to listen to a ghost, it’s not surprising everyone ends up dead. While actor’s speak and portray the Bard’s words, storytellers provide insightful, often comic, commentary on the plot and escalating action. The play preserves some of Shakepeare’s most elegant passages as well as the nature of this 15th century tale, but makes it understandable to audiences of all ages. This is Hamlet like you have never seen it before!
